About the Role
Meco is seeking an Intermediate Civil / Structural Engineer to join its team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
This role is well suited for a civil or structural engineer with at least four years of relevant design experience who is a P.Eng. or close to obtaining their P.Eng. designation. The successful candidate will be actively involved in civil and/or structural design work and will support projects from assessment and design through construction support and reporting.
The ideal candidate is technically strong, practical, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a small consulting environment where engineers are expected to take ownership, manage multiple priorities, and contribute across different project areas.
Key Responsibilities
The Intermediate Civil / Structural Engineer will support engineering work across the following areas:
Design and Technical Engineering
- Complete civil and/or structural design and analysis for a variety of consulting engineering projects.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical assessments, design notes, drawings, specifications, and reports.
- Support design work related to structures, civil infrastructure, hydraulic structures, retaining structures, bridges, foundations, buildings, and other project types as required.
- Review drawings, calculations, technical documents, and project deliverables for accuracy, quality, and code compliance.
- Apply relevant Canadian codes, standards, guidelines, and accepted engineering practices.
- Use engineering software and design tools to support technical analysis and project delivery.
- Work with drafting and technical staff to develop drawings and ensure design intent is clearly communicated.
Field Work and Inspections
- Conduct site visits, inspections, condition assessments, and field reviews.
- Observe construction activities for general conformance with design intent and project requirements.
- Identify, document, and communicate technical issues, deficiencies, or potential non-conformance.
- Prepare field reports, inspection notes, and technical documentation.
- Represent Meco professionally when interacting with clients, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
Project and Client Support
- Support project managers with technical delivery, coordination, schedules, budgets, and client communication.
- Coordinate with internal team members, contractors, clients, and external consultants.
- Assist with proposals, scopes of work, estimates, and project planning as required.
- Provide technical input and practical solutions to support successful project outcomes.
- Accurately track and report time and expenses in Meco’s project management systems.
Professional Practice and Team Contribution
- Exercise sound professional judgment and maintain confidentiality with client and organizational information.
- Contribute to a collaborative, supportive, and accountable team environment.
- Mentor or support junior staff, EITs, and technical team members as appropriate.
- Continue developing technical and non-technical skills, including communication, client service, teamwork, and project coordination.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant civil and/or structural engineering experience.
- P.Eng. designation in Nova Scotia, or eligibility and near-term readiness to obtain P.Eng. status.
- Active experience in civil and/or structural design.
- Strong understanding of engineering design, analysis, construction documentation, and field review practices.
- Experience working in a consulting engineering environment is considered an asset.
- Experience with dam safety, hydrotechnical, geotechnical, bridge, marine, municipal, or public-sector projects is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a flexible, fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel for site visits and field work within Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
Technical Skills and Assets
The following would be considered assets:
- Experience with structural analysis/design software such as S-FRAME, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, or similar.
- Experience with civil/geotechnical/hydrotechnical software such as Civil 3D, GeoStudio, HEC-RAS, or similar.
- Experience with AutoCAD and reviewing technical drawings.
- Knowledge of relevant Canadian codes and standards, including NBC, CSA standards, and related civil/structural design guidelines.
- Experience preparing technical reports, specifications, cost estimates, proposals, and construction documentation.
- Experience supporting field inspections, construction administration, and contractor coordination.
