Why This Role Matters
The Community Services Assistant plays an important role in helping Wei Wai Kum Members of all ages access meaningful programs, services, and opportunities. By supporting the Community Services team with day-to-day coordination, administration, and program delivery, this role helps create a welcoming, inclusive, and connected community while contributing to the physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual well-being of Members.
What You’ll Be Doing
The Community Services Assistant provides administrative, organizational, and program support to the Community Services Department in the planning, coordination, and delivery of programs and services for Wei Wai Kum Members of all ages. The position assists Community Services staff in creating and supporting inclusive opportunities that promote the physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual well-being of Members, while contributing to a welcoming, supportive, and community-focused environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with organizing, scheduling, and promoting recreational, cultural and preventative activities and programs.
- Encourage and support community members to participate in activities and programs.
- Help to facilitate special celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas, Easter, cultural gatherings and exchanges, and indigenous games.
- Assist in preparing a monthly schedule of activities and ensure it is published in the Band newsletter.
- Attend relevant training and workshops
- Be open, creative and receptive to new ideas.
- Liaise with the community members who attend the activities and programs.
- Maintain relations with the Elders, youth, parents, volunteers and community members who assist with programs.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment that meets all regulatory requirements.
- Support the effective operation of the Pre-School by performing duties as assigned by the Supervisor and relieving the Supervisor as required.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and collaborate with other professionals to continuously improve the quality of care and education.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
- Minimum Grade 12 education.
- First Aid Level 1 certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
- FoodSafe certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and a clean driving record.
- Ability and willingness to obtain a Class 4 Driver’s Licence, if required.
- Ability to supervise and provide instruction to program participants.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
- Experience working with children, youth, families, Elders, or community members.
- Experience developing, organizing, and implementing recreational, cultural, social, or community-based programs and activities.
- Experience working within a First Nations community.
- Knowledge and understanding of First Nations communities, Indigenous culture, traditions, and community practices.
- Experience supporting programs that promote the physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual well-being of community Members.
