Licensed Security Guard - Full-Time, Permanent
Neill-Wycik Co-op College Inc. | Downtown Toronto | Serving students and travellers since 1970
About Neill-Wycik Co-Op
We are a year-round student housing co-operative that also operates a seasonal hostel each summer. Centrally located within walking distance of College and Dundas stations. We employ a 24-hour in-house security/concierge operation that keeps our residents, guests, and staff safe.
The Opportunity
We’re hiring a full-time, permanent Licensed Security Guard for 35–40 hours per week. This is a unionized position with predictable, ongoing hours — not a stopgap or a second job. We seek someone who can commit to this role long-term and provide consistent, dependable coverage across afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts, including occasional weekends.
· Pay: $23.03/hr to start, increasing to $23.50/hr after a 3-month probationary period
· Hours: 35–44 hours/week, scheduled across afternoons, evenings, overnights, and occasional weekends
· Status: Full-time, permanent, unionized (union dues apply)
· Benefits: Dental care, extended health care, vision care, life insurance, RRSP matching, employee assistance program, on-site gym, on-site parking - available after 1 year and meeting collective agreement requirements
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking a guard who does more than complete patrols and watch screens. We’re looking for someone who can read a room, de-escalate a situation before it becomes one, and brings calm, professional judgment to high-pressure moments. If you take pride in doing this work well - not just doing it - we want to hear from you.
Required:
· Valid PSIS Security Guard Licence
· Strong customer service skills
· Excellent English verbal and written communication
· Computer literacy
· Comfortable navigating stairwells on foot while performing multiple patrols and working in all weather conditions, including inclement weather
· Able to work independently or as part of a team, with sound judgment and quick, rational thinking under pressure
· A strong work ethic grounded in respect, integrity, and responsibility
· Full availability and willingness to commit to permanent, full-time hours, including evenings, overnights, and weekends
Strong assets:
· Prior experience in a security role
· Fluency in additional languages - preference given to candidates fluent in French, Spanish, Mandarin/Cantonese, or Portuguese, reflecting our diverse resident and guest community
· Self-defence training
· Mental Health First Aid or Standard First Aid certification
What You’ll Do
· Patrol the property regularly and report incidents clearly and concisely.
· Use a 2-way radio and answer calls professionally.
· Respond to alarms and assist people who need help.
· Monitor access control and CCTV systems.
· Take charge and direct others calmly during emergencies or incidents.
· Log all visitors through our visitor management software.
· Operate the fire panel in response to fire alarms.
· Promptly alert the Security Manager or General Manager in emergencies.
· Investigate complaints and incidents; provide first aid as required.
· Facilitate the movement of first responders.
· Process parcels and packages; lift and move up to 35 lbs.
· Manage conflicts and incidents quietly and privately, de-escalating without disrupting others.
What We Offer
· Stable, full-time, permanent hours - 35 - 40 hours/week, year-round
· Union protections and a clear pay progression
· Full benefits package after 1 year (dental, extended health, vision, life insurance, RRSP match, EAP, on-site gym, on-site parking)
