As an Inside Sales Account Manager, you will buy ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal from an existing portfolio of industrial accounts, and sell recycling, bin placement, and transportation services into those same accounts. You will deal directly with owners, plant and operations managers, and purchasing or materials managers at manufacturers, fabricators, and industrial scrap generators. This role is 100% existing account management and buying — there is no cold calling and no new-logo prospecting, because the outside sales team opens new accounts. You will be assigned a portion of an established book of business. Accounts are located across Southern Ontario, including Hamilton, Toronto, London, and the region broadly west of Montreal. The role is based in the Hamilton office, with occasional face-to-face customer visits. This is an expansion role — two people are being hired at the same time so they can train as a pair — reporting to the Manager of Account Management. The base salary is $60,000 – $63,000 CAD, plus a discretionary annual bonus.

THE COMPANY & CULTURE
Our client has been in business approximately 90 years and is a family-owned, privately held metal recycler — the largest privately held company in its industry. They employ approximately 3,000 people across more than 136 locations in North America, with approximately 500 people at the Hamilton operation where this role is based. Revenue is growing 25% to 50% per year, and the US footprint is expanding, with recent or pending activity in Buffalo, Ohio, Maine, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.
The business is fully vertically integrated across four divisions — ferrous, non-ferrous, retail, and transportation — and runs an in-house trucking fleet significantly larger than those of its competitors. This allows the company to control material from collection through processing and final shipment. Approximately 80% of the material handled crosses the Canada–US border. Freight is the single largest cost in the business, so yard and transload locations are chosen deliberately to sit close to concentrated customer and mill activity.
The stated culture pillars are Passion & Excellence, Teamwork & Collaboration, Agility & Innovation, and Community Engagement. Leadership is data-driven and hands-on, and long-tenured senior people are accessible for day-to-day questions. Commodity markets move, so priorities can shift quickly — candidates should be comfortable in a fast-moving environment.
OFFICE LOCATION & SALES TERRITORY
- Office location: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
- Work arrangement: In office, 5 days per week. No work from home.
- Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
- Sales territory: Southern Ontario — accounts span Hamilton, Toronto, London, and the region broadly west of Montreal. Northern Ontario is excluded.
- Customer-facing expectations: buying and account work is done primarily by phone and email from the Hamilton office, with occasional face-to-face customer meetings and site visits, for example year-end customer clean-ups or site photos
- Overnight travel: None (0%)
- Candidates must live within a reasonable daily commute of Hamilton, Ontario
EXPERIENCE, BACKGROUND & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- 1 to 3 years of B2B sales, account management, buying or purchasing, or business operations experience in a role where you owned numbers and outcomes
- A sales-driven mentality is the single most important requirement. You will buy material, negotiate, and construct deals. This is not an order-taking, data-entry, or passive customer service position.
- Comfortable working with numbers on your own initiative — pricing, freight, internal costs, and margin calculations, and completing profit-and-loss templates. Our client describes the arithmetic as grade-school math applied carefully; the real requirement is the willingness to go find the right numbers and combine them correctly.
- Experience communicating directly with customers, including face-to-face meetings
- Ability to work independently and make decisions with limited supervision
- Demonstrated attention to detail — a small error is costly in this business
- Strong organizational and multitasking ability across many concurrent accounts
- Industry experience in metal recycling, waste, transportation, or manufacturing is preferred but not required. Full training is provided. Backgrounds in car rental branch operations, hotel and hospitality operations, and other high-volume customer-facing operational roles have translated well.
- Any buying, purchasing, trading, or commodities exposure is an asset
- Post-secondary education or equivalent professional experience. A degree is not required.
- A driver's licence is an asset for occasional customer visits in a company fleet vehicle. It is not a hiring requirement.
- Candidates who want a road-based outside sales seat from day one are not a fit for this role as posted. It is office-based, and it can develop into outside sales over time.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Microsoft Excel — Intermediate
- Microsoft Word and Outlook — Basic
- Salesforce or comparable CRM — Basic, an asset; training is provided
- Internal templates are used for profit-and-loss and pricing calculations. You will not be required to build spreadsheets from scratch.
THE PRODUCT / SERVICE / SOLUTION
- Purchase of ferrous scrap metal from industrial and commercial generators
- Purchase of non-ferrous scrap metal, including copper, aluminum, brass, and related grades
- Industrial scrap management services — bin and container placement, scheduled pickups, and on-site material handling
- Freight and transportation services delivered through an in-house fleet
- Retail scrap purchasing operations
PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS / INDUSTRY FOCUS / DECISION MAKER(S)
- Manufacturers, metal fabricators, and industrial plants that generate scrap as a by-product of production
- Demolition, construction, and industrial service contractors
- Smaller scrap dealers who sell material into the yard
- Company size ranges from small owner-operated businesses to large multi-plant manufacturers
- Customers are located across Southern Ontario. Material flows to processing yards and mills in both Canada and the United States.
- Decision-makers: owners and general managers, plant and operations managers, purchasing and materials managers, and controllers
SALES CYCLE / ORDER VALUE / ACCOUNT SIZE
- Accounts are recurring rather than one-time. Material moves continuously and the account relationship is ongoing.
- Pricing is tied to published commodity indexes and market ranges that move with the market, so pricing conversations with accounts are frequent
- The existing team of three manages a portfolio of more than 800 accounts and buys approximately 75% of the material entering the Hamilton yard. Larger accounts receive closer and more frequent attention.
- Most buying happens inside existing customer agreements. Customer situations that fall outside those agreements require fresh calculations and a new deal to be constructed.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES
- Full vertical integration across ferrous, non-ferrous, retail, and transportation divisions — our client controls the material from pickup through to final destination
- An in-house transportation fleet significantly larger than those of its competitors
- More than 136 locations across North America, positioned close to concentrated customer and mill activity. Because freight is the largest cost in the business, location density is a direct pricing advantage.
- Approximately 90 years in business, family owned, financially stable, and growing 25% to 50% per year
- Direct access to experienced, hands-on people who will answer questions as they come up
TYPICAL DAY & DUTIES
- 65% Account Management (customer communication, buying, negotiating, and constructing deals within assigned accounts)
- 25% Administrative Duties (numbers and analysis: profit-and-loss statements, costs, margins, market indexes, records, and CRM)
- 10% Customer Service (resolving discrepancies on shipments, weights, pricing, and payments)
- 0% New Business Development (new accounts are opened by the outside sales team)
On a typical day you will be speaking with the customers in your assigned book, buying material and negotiating pricing, building or updating profit-and-loss numbers on your accounts, reviewing freight and internal costs against current market indexes, and explaining your buying decisions to customers using the numbers behind them. You will resolve discrepancies on shipments, weights, pricing, and payments, keep records and CRM activity current, and coordinate with operations, dispatch, purchasing, and finance. You will not always have an immediate answer for a customer, but you are expected to know which internal resource to go to for it. Occasional face-to-face customer meetings and site visits are part of the role.
LEADS
- 0% cold calling and cold prospecting
- 100% existing accounts — you are assigned a portion of an established book of business
- New accounts are opened by the outside sales team and handed to account management for ongoing ownership
- Inbound customer questions, pricing requests, and service issues come directly to you as the account owner
OVERNIGHT TRAVEL
- None (0%)
- Occasional local day visits to customer sites in a company fleet vehicle
SUPPORT & TRAINING
- 3 to 6 months learning the business in the yard and across all four divisions — ferrous, non-ferrous, retail, and transportation — so you understand how material moves, is processed, priced, and shipped before you own account numbers
- Paired training. Two people are being hired at the same time and will learn alongside each other.
- Direct mentoring from the manager and from long-tenured, hands-on team members who are available for questions
- Training on preparing profit-and-loss statements, reviewing internal costs, reading market indexes and commodity ranges, and interpreting those figures for customers
- Our client's position is that this industry is not learned in a classroom. New people learn by spending time with the existing team, and outside sales employees are encouraged to spend time with this group to understand the whole business.
- You will begin handling assigned accounts under guidance in year one and move to full independent account ownership in year two
WHY YOU SHOULD APPLY
- You inherit an established book of accounts. There is no cold calling and no starting from zero.
- Real autonomy. You are the buyer and dealmaker on your accounts, not an order-taker executing someone else's decisions.
- This seat provides the broadest education available in the business — buying, pricing, freight, P&L, and how material actually moves. Current leaders who started in this role include a vice president, a commercial manager, a service manager, and regional yard managers.
- A defined path into outside sales for those who want it, without needing to live in a car to get sales experience now
- A 90-year-old, family-owned business that is the largest privately held company in its industry, growing 25% to 50% per year with an expanding North American footprint
