The Dr. Peter Centre provides compassionate HIV care for people living with significant health issues including mental illness, trauma, substance use, unstable housing and poverty.
Through its day health, 24-hour care residence and enhanced supportive housing programs, the Dr. Peter Centre provides healthy meals, counselling, therapies, nursing, and a safe place for peer socialization and support. This integrated model of care successfully engages individuals in their health care, improving adherence to HIV treatment and overall health.
We are currently looking for a Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse to join our Residence team on a casual basis.
Position Description
Under the supervision of the Clinical Care Manager or designate, and working within a multi-disciplinary team, the RN/RPN is responsible for the assessment and provision of direct nursing care to the residents within a supported living environment.
Duties
- Development of care plans for the Centre’s residents based on on-going assessments;
- Planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care using a self-care model;
- Administration, documentation and management of medications;
- Teaching focused on life skills, medication and other self-care needs;
- Responsible for supervision and leadership to other health care staff; and
- On-going collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and other community healthcare providers.
Skills and Knowledge
- Recent related experience working with IDU populations, substance use, mental health, HIV/AIDS, clients with alternate lifestyles and other marginalized “at risk” populations;
- Experience working with marginalized populations in an acute and/or community living environment;
- Knowledge of harm reduction approaches;
- Excellent problem-solving skills;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Conflict resolution skills; and
- Ability to deal with stress which may result from difficult behavior and/or emergency situations.
Qualifications
- Diploma from a recognized nursing program; or BSN from a recognized University;
- Current, practicing membership with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM);
- Current CPR with AED – level C certification required; and
- Current first aid certification.
General Working Conditions
This is a casual position with an hourly pay rate of $41.42 - $59.52. This position requires flexibility and the ability to prioritize workload, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment where demands and deadlines may change with short notice. Multitasking and flexibility are a must in order to meet deadlines, and to support many operational functions/activities that may occur concurrently or without notice. An understanding of the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive employee/client information is necessary.
