PCK Intellectual Property (“PCK”) is known for its exceptionally strong originating patent drafting practice, acting directly before the USPTO and WIPO in the areas of IP strategy, including drafting of applications and prosecution on behalf of clients based in Canada, the USA, and Europe. THE OPPORTUNITY
Depending on the candidate’s experience and strengths, we are looking for a patent agent to assume a role with some or all of the following responsibilities:
- Assisting with and overseeing patent filings before CIPO, USPTO and WIPO.
- Responding to both foreign and domestic Office Actions.
- Maintaining and overseeing patent files via electronic docketing system.
- Corresponding with clients, foreign associates and patent offices.
- Performing patentability searches, landscape searches, freedom to operate searches.
- Preparing patentability opinions.
- Building and maintaining successful client relationships.
- Attending client intake meetings and invention disclosure sessions.
- Meeting with inventors to identify their invention’s points of novelty.
- Drafting patent applications for foreign and domestic filings.
- Visiting clients, incubators and other stakeholders in the GTA/Kitchener Waterloo corridor.
- Attending conferences and participating in other business development initiatives.
- Any other tasks that may be assigned.
THE SKILL SET
- Class 1 or Class 2 CPATA license status preferred but will welcome applications of registered patent agents/attorneys from other jurisdictions with strong résumés and willingness to pursue CPATA Class 1 license.
- Successful completion of a degree in engineering, computer science, science or a related field.
- Minimum of two years’ relevant experience in patent drafting and prosecution for both Canadian and foreign jurisdictions in a law firm context or in a corporate (in-house) IP group.
- Client-oriented and results-driven mindset, ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to structure information clearly, concisely, and logically.
- Excellent time management skills.
- High level of motivation and commitment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and foster positive client and colleague relationships.
