Position Summary
The Animal Care Department Grounds and Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining safe, clean, and functional animal care facilities, grounds, enclosures, and support buildings. This role combines groundskeeping, general maintenance, custodial duties, and support for animal care operations to ensure a safe environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Grounds Maintenance
- Maintain landscaped areas, lawns, gardens, pathways, parking lots, and fenced areas.
- Operate groundskeeping equipment including lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, and snow removal equipment.
- Remove litter, debris, fallen branches, and other hazards from property grounds.
- Perform seasonal duties such as snow removal, salting, leaf collection, and landscaping.
- Inspect grounds regularly and report safety concerns or repair needs.
Facility Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on buildings, animal enclosures, fencing, gates, kennels, and related infrastructure.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment and facility systems.
- Repair or replace damaged fixtures, locks, doors, hardware, and basic plumbing components.
- Assist with painting, carpentry, and general facility improvement projects.
- Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations.
Animal Facility Support
- Clean and sanitize animal housing areas, outdoor runs, and common areas as required.
- Assist with enclosure set-up, modifications, and maintenance.
- Support animal care staff with moving supplies, equipment, bedding, and feed.
- Monitor facilities for conditions that may impact animal health, welfare, or safety.
- Maintain proper waste disposal and biosecurity practices.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 1–2 years of groundskeeping, maintenance, or facilities experience preferred.
- Experience in an animal care environment is an asset.
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools.
- Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
Pay: From $17.60 per hour
