Job Overview:
The Operations Accountant provides financial and accounting support to the Operations team, with a strong focus on cost control, operational performance, and financial accuracy. The role supports day-to-day operational activities including cost tracking, job costing, invoicing, month-end processes, financial reporting, accounting and expense management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide project accounting and financial support to Operations and Project Management, with a strong focus on job costing, project financial performance, and cost control.
- Track and analyze project costs, budgets, commitments, labour, materials, purchase orders, timesheets, receiving tickets, and LEMs to ensure accurate and timely job costing.
- Support month-end close activities, including reviewing and closing receiving tickets, reconciling LEMs, reviewing project costs and commitments, assisting with accruals, and supporting collections.
- Prepare monthly project and operational financial reports, including budget-to-actual analysis, variance analysis, project profitability reporting, expense reporting, and ad hoc financial analysis.
- Review and manage purchase requisitions and purchase orders, ensuring appropriate coding, project allocation, accuracy, and timely closure of outstanding items.
- Process and review vendor invoices, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and customer collections, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and discrepancies are resolved.
- Provide accounting and financial guidance to Project Managers and operational teams, including support with project costs, purchasing, cost coding, documentation, and financial procedures.
- Maintain accurate project financial records, supporting documentation, and accounting information within company systems and ensure project files remain complete and up to date.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, audits, and project financial reviews, providing information and analysis to help identify cost pressures, trends, and opportunities.
- Support operations, by providing practical financial insight, challenging assumptions, and supporting decisions that improve project profitability and operational performance.
- Work closely with site leaders and frontline teams to improve forecasting, reporting, financial controls, job costing, and operational processes based on field and project requirements.
- Identify and implement opportunities to streamline accounting and operational processes, improve financial accuracy and efficiency, and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Prepare ad hoc analysis and reports, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- 2–4 years of progressive accounting experience required.
- Experience supporting field, site, construction, industrial, or operational environments is an asset.
- Strong understanding of month-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and audit support.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with accounting systems; Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, identify issues proactively, and manage competing priorities.
- Strong communication and business-partnering skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across the organization.
- Willingness to travel regularly to operating sites and work in field environments as required.
