Applications are invited for the position of Public Services Assistant at Thorold Public Library.
Reporting to the CEO/Chief Librarian, the incumbent performs all duties, procedures and policies related to circulation and information services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs reference and reader’s advisory service
- Performs all duties and procedures related to Children’s, Circulation and Information services
- Inputs data and operates Integrated Library System (ILS)
- Shelves, shelf-reads and shifts materials
- Opens, check ins and distributes daily mail
- Processes library materials and adds holdings
- Performs all duties related to interlibrary loan procedures
- Maintains photocopy equipment: fills paper, cleans glass, changes toner cartridge and toner collection bottle
- Performs clerical functions such as keyboarding, photocopying and filing
- Unpacks and sorts new library materials and deliveries
- Assesses all situations in dealing with the public
- Performs all opening and closing procedures for the Service Desk
- Responsible for maintaining the privacy of personal information and borrowing record of patrons in accordance with privacy legislation
- Other duties as assigned
Equipment used includes microfilm reader, printer, photocopier, debit machine, Integrated Library System (ILS), calculator, laminator, and electronic devices such as ereaders, iPads and tablets.
Education/Experience:
Minimum Secondary School diploma along with a minimum of three (3) months experience in library operations or equivalent. Accurate keyboarding skills of approximately 50 w.p.m.
Conditions of Employment:
Required to work under general supervision in a public environment involving some periods of visual and mental concentration with frequent interruptions. Good verbal and written communication skills required. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle.

Rate of Pay: $26.02 (Band 1) (2024 Rate)
Hours of Work: Hours of work are scheduled on an irregular basis with a guarantee of six (6) hours per week, includes evenings and weekends
