The role is open to people in and around Calgary, and Edmonton, AB, as the work is completed at job sites in the area.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair high-voltage power systems equipment in substations, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, buswork, protective relays, and control systems.
- Perform terminations, splicing, and testing of high-voltage and control cables.
- Execute switching, isolation, and grounding procedures safely in accordance with utility and company protocols.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and manufacturer's instructions to ensure accurate installations.
- Conduct functional testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspection activities on substation equipment as per scheduled programs.
- Collaborate with engineering and project teams to resolve technical issues and implement design changes in the field.
- Maintain detailed records of work performed, test results, and as-built documentation.
- Adhere to all Alberta OHS regulations, Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and strict safety standards while working in energized and de-energized environments.
- Mentor and support junior electricians and apprentices on site.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Valid Alberta Journeyman Electrician ticket (Red Seal certification preferred).
- 4+ years of experience working on high-voltage power systems (69kV and above preferred) in substation or utility environments.
- Strong knowledge of power systems protection, controls, and substation equipment.
- Experience with high-voltage testing equipment (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger) is a significant asset.
- Thorough understanding of switching procedures, arc flash hazards, and safe work practices.
- Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings and technical specifications.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Post-secondary diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or Power Systems is an asset.
