Interim Team Lead- Shelter Services - 12 Month

The Team Lead, Shelter Services provides leadership and operational oversight of shelter programs and ensures the delivery of high-quality services to individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, and housing challenges. This role fosters a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically healthy workplace culture. The Team Lead is responsible for coaching, mentoring, and developing a team of employees, and ensuring adherence to best practices, organizational policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Provide day-to-day leadership, supervision and support to shelter staff.
- Foster a positive, respectful, inclusive and psychologically safe workplace culture.
- Support employee engagement, team building, and professional development.
- Monitor staff performance and provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, feedback and recognition.
- Support staff scheduling and ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained.
- Identify training and development needs, and support training and re-training of the team as needed. Ensure required certifications and mandatory training are completed and up to date.
- Assist in recruitment and selection of staff by performing duties such as reviewing applications and participating in interview panels.
- Support staff conflict and concerns, in accordance with CMHA policies and escalate as necessary.
Shelter Operations
- Oversee daily shelter operations and ensure services are delivered effectively and consistently.
- Ensure the safety, security, and well-being of guests/participants, staff, and visitors.
- Respond promptly and professionally to matters related to Shelter Services, including incidents, emergencies, and operational challenges. Ensure that matters are properly documented and reported appropriately.
- Support timely crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and de-escalation efforts as required.
- Advocate for participants by helping them navigate barriers, access financial supports, and connect with appropriate community resources.
- Collaborate with community partners in case planning activities to support participant goals and service needs.
- Assist staff in managing complex guest/participant situations.
- Participate in emergency response planning, implementation and execution.
- Work closely with internal teams and service providers to ensure building maintenance, repairs, and capital projects are identified, and completed in a timely manner.
- Provide rotational on-call coverage, as part of the ‘on-call’ program
Community and Partnerships
- Act as a representative for Shelter Services and CMHA, ensuring respectful and professional communication, aligned with broader CMHA efforts.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners, service providers, and stakeholder groups to identify emerging needs, service gaps, and community priorities.
Administration and Compliance
- Develop, implement and evaluate practices, plans, and objectives for shelter programs.
- Ensure compliance with CMHA policies, procedures, funding requirements, contract standards, and applicable legislation.
- Complete operational reports, incident reports, and program documentation.
- Monitor approved expenditures, ensure compliance with organizational financial policies and procedures, and assist with financial reporting and payment processing.
Qualifications
- Degree in Social Services or related field.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License, and use of a personal vehicle
- 3-5 years of experience in shelter services, supportive housing, mental health, additions, social services, or experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or complex social barriers.
- 3 years previous leadership, supervisory or team lead experience.
- Certifications in CPR, First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Food Safe.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with participants, staff, community partners and external stakeholders.
- Computer proficiency and experience with MS Office, with the ability to prepare accurate reports, documentation, correspondence and records.
- Demonstrated experience managing front-line teams in complex, client-centred environments.
- Understanding of trauma-informed, harm-reduction care models and experience working with high-needs or vulnerable populations is required.

- Excellent knowledge in relation to mental health, substance use and concurrent disorders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated collaborative leadership style.
- Ability to develop and manage budgets within operational parameters.
- Excellent computer skills and ability to utilize relevant new technology in the workplace. Working knowledge of HIFIS and Housing Connections is an asset.
- Class 5 driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

- May involve exposure to crisis situations, behavioural challenges, and emergency response activities.
- Travel to CMHA work sites is required.
- Requires flexibility to work on-call as required.
- Regular walking, standing, and movement is required.
