Description:
The Operation & Maintenance Lead plans, organizes, and executes the operation and maintenance of water/wastewater treatment plant(s) throughout Bermuda, and potentially other Caribbean islands that the company operates in, with sound judgment and efficiency. Additionally, plans, supervises, assigns work, and evaluates the performance of the plant, Team & sub-contractors.

- Knowledge of:
- Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and troubleshooting.
- Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Operations.
- Operating principles of plant equipment such as valves, pumps, and motors.
- Methods and techniques of maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting water/wastewater plant equipment.
- Safety regulations associated with water/wastewater treatment plant equipment.
- The CMMS system HIPPO is considered an asset.
- Ability to:
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Plan and effectively manage schedules and execute tasks efficiently and timely.
- Read, interpret, and calibrate gauges and other recording devices related to water/wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Read, interpret, and understand technical manuals, drawings, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
- Adapt to changing technologies and learn the functionality of new equipment and systems.
- Use and operate self-contained breathing apparatus equipment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients/customers and colleagues.
- Thrive in a high-stress and fast-paced environment and continuously deliver high-caliber output.
- Flexibility to adjust operational procedures as required to meet dynamic business conditions.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other related software.
- Health and safety training, such as confined space training, is considered an asset.
Education, Experience & Requirements
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in Operations and Maintenance of MBR’s.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (or related field) or Certified Operator level 3 or 4.
- Certificate in Supervisory Management from a recognized institution is considered an asset.
- Valid Police Certificate of Character.
- Valid manual Driver’s License.
- 2 written character references.
Responsibilities:
Operations
- Monitor plant performance, water quality and data trending, calibration, and verification of equipment function; submit comprehensive analysis reports internally and to clients.
- Conduct asset management assessments including forecasting funds needed for replacement equipment, materials, and supplies and maintaining a register and an inventory of assets and spare parts necessary for the efficient operations of the treatment plant.
- Participate in the development of the assigned program budget; monitor, and seek approval for expenditures, recommending budgetary adjustments as necessary.
- Create equipment and other asset replacement plans for the water/wastewater treatment plant facilities; manage internal and external repair of equipment with subcontractors, ensuring good equipment operation.
- Prepare proactive schedules for maintenance of equipment and water/wastewater treatment plants.
- Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document, analyze, and manage the equipment preventative maintenance process.
- Diagnose operating problems and take effective and efficient corrective actions; troubleshoot and/or respond to emergencies with water/wastewater systems; perform alarm response and manage electrical alert system.
- Liaise with Project Management Teams, Contractors, Engineers, Consultants, and other professionals to plan, coordinate and execute projects, commissions calibration, and routine maintenance and repairs of water/wastewater treatment plant equipment and systems.
- Implement and adhere to company policies and procedures, with special attention paid to the Company’s Health and Safety policies, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (steel toe boots, reflective vest, hard hat) when necessary.
Business Development
- Cultivating strong relationships with new clients, while maintaining existing client relationships.
- Provide required support for the organization’s business development team.
- Respond to inquiries made by clients about company services.
Team & Sub-contractor Management
- Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the performance of the Maintenance Team by managing absenteeism, providing continuous feedback and coaching, establishing performance requirements and personal development targets, conducting timely and constructive performance evaluations and managing employee discipline in accordance with company policy and in collaboration with the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Ensure Team members are appropriately trained in the safe and efficient performance of their duties, and that safe work environments are maintained at all times.
- Identify resource needs for water/wastewater treatment; review needs with management and allocate resources accordingly.
- Review work orders submitted by Sub-Contractors/Maintenance Team on a weekly basis, ensuring their timely submission to the Admin/Finance Team.
- Direct team/sub-contractor in electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment. Perform routine to difficult maintenance repairs and installations to plant equipment.
- Set a good example by adhering to the Company’s policies and procedures and by encouraging the Team to meet and/or exceed the company’s goals and objectives on a consistent basis.
- Other commensurate duties as may reasonably be assigned.
Working Conditions
- Environmental: this position operates in a treatment plant environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, solvents, electrical energy, toxic materials, hazardous chemicals and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work in or with water and/or wastewater in confined spaces; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces.
- Physical: moderate to heavy lifting; standing/sitting and walking for prolonged periods of time; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and operating motorized equipment.
- Requires occasional overseas travel to and from Client locations.
