Reporting to the Director of People Analytics, the Senior Data Developer will leverage advanced technical skills to design, deploy, and maintain robust data solutions across both on-premises SQL and Azure cloud environments. As a key member of the People Analytics team, this role involves creating and optimizing data models, developing data pipelines, and implementing business logic to address diverse business needs.
The Senior Data Developer will collaborate closely with VCH technical teams to support a major data migration initiative to cloud solutions (MS Azure and Databricks). Key responsibilities include partnering with the data engineering and analytics teams, external vendors, and other stakeholders on cross-functional projects. The role is crucial in ensuring the successful delivery and promotion of scalable data solutions within the approved enterprise environments. The successful candidate will apply strong design, migration, administration, and support experience in MS Azure and Databricks environments, driving initiatives that enhance the department's data capabilities and overall efficiency.
As a Senior Data Developer with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

Design and implement scalable, reliable and efficient data solutions that achieve specific business needs and initiatives. Consult on architectural specifications, ensuring feasibility, functionality, and integration with existing models.

Provide data engineering services across all disciplines and stakeholders within an assigned portfolio. Perform functions such as coordinating and carrying out feasibility studies, conducting workload efficiency analysis using formal data gathering techniques, analyzing, designing and implementing appropriate data solutions.

Assist in the design and implementation of cloud solutions. Analyze requirements, develop architecture / design artifacts, and execute strategies to create analytic environments to serve customers within VCH and partner health authorities.

Act as a leader in the team and the organization by providing technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to junior data engineer, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration and innovation within the team and the organization.

Collaborate with Data Scientists, Analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements, provide clean and reliable data and support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives.

Implement data solutions/pipelines while applying data and cost optimization strategies by performing system and requirements analysis.

Prepare detailed documentation and specifications for the implementation of data solutions/pipelines.

Stay abreast of the latest trends, developments, and best practices in data engineering, big data technologies, cloud computing, and related domains, and apply innovative approaches to solve complex data engineering challenges.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management or a data intensive related field.

Five (5) years’ experience as a Data Developer two (2) of which will have been in a senior role or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Data Engineering related certification from at least one cloud service provider is an asset (e.g. Microsoft Azure Data Engineer Associate).
Knowledge & Abilities

Proven ability to develop, deploy and maintain complex multi-tiered data infrastructure, database, and data solutions with on-prem and cloud tools.

Demonstrated hands on experience optimizing data solutions and pipelines ensuring scalability, performance, and cost effectiveness are addressed.

Strong proficiency developing in SQL languages such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, Databricks SQL.
-
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Python, Scala, and Spark with an ability to write efficient and scalable code for data processing/transformation tasks.

Strong understanding of coding best practices and modern architectural patterns.

Demonstrated strength in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing architecture with solid knowledge of various industry standards.

Understanding of software data development, deployment and release processes, and automated test frameworks especially within a DevOps practice and DevOps toolset.

Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills.

Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
