Architectural Designer
We are seeking an experienced Architectural Designer to join our design team. This role is responsible for developing practical, well-coordinated architectural designs and construction documents from initial concept through permitting and construction, ensuring that everything is delivered on time and complies with the Ontario Building Code.
The ideal candidate combines strong design ability with a solid understanding of commercial and residential construction, building codes, structural systems, and constructability. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Small Buildings BCIN qualification, Architectural License, or Professional Structural Engineering License/designation.
This position will work closely with clients, project managers, estimators, site superintendents, consultants, and municipal building departments to develop designs that are attractive, code-compliant, cost-conscious, and practical to build.

Responsibilities:
Architectural Design & Documentation
- Develop conceptual designs, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and complete construction drawing packages.
- Prepare drawings for renovations, additions, custom homes, accessory structures, and other small-building projects.
- Translate client requirements and project objectives into practical architectural solutions.
- Produce permit-ready and construction-ready drawing packages.
- Coordinate architectural drawings with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, and other consultants.
- Review existing building conditions and incorporate field measurements into proposed designs.
- Revise drawings throughout design development, permitting, and construction.
Building Code & Permitting
- Review designs for compliance with applicable building codes, zoning requirements, and municipal regulations.
- Prepare and coordinate building permit submissions.
- Respond to municipal plan-review comments and revise drawings as required.
- Communicate with building officials, consultants, and other authorities having jurisdiction.
- Where appropriately qualified, provide required design review, schedules, forms, or professional documentation within the individual's scope of practice.
Construction & Technical Coordination
- Design with a strong understanding of constructability, sequencing, material selection, and cost.
- Work directly with project managers, estimators, and field staff to identify practical construction solutions.
- Assist with resolving design and drawing conflicts discovered during construction.
- Review shop drawings, product information, and trade submissions where appropriate.
- Participate in site visits to verify existing conditions and address construction-related design questions.
- Develop architectural details that clearly communicate design intent to field personnel and subcontractors.
Client Contact
- Schedule and manage client meetings to the established construction time-line
- Work closely with clients during the design and material selection processes to ensure that their expectations are met
- Advise the clients as to the timeline requirements for decisions and selections in the development of the design projects
Design Process:
- Manage the entire design process for assigned projects using technical expertise
- Ensure structural drawings and designs are produced on time and comply with established specifications and standards
- Ensure design information is complete, accurate and easy to decipher
- Ensure designs produced are of high quality
- Ensure designs are available to Estimators and Project Managers at pace with the construction schedule
- Maintain thorough, organized documentation of the design process
- Keep up to date with changing building legislation and codes of practice relating to design
- Strive to eliminate health and safety risks in the design for the client, field staff and subcontractors
- Strive to avoid errors and omissions during the design process in order to reduce financial risk and scheduling conflicts
- Provide input to the Estimator as needed during the proposal and budgeting process
- Advise on the selection of materials used and other aspects of procurement
- Liaise with architectural and engineering consultants
- Liaise with Building Planning Departments and Conservation Authorities
- Obtain building permits for projects as applicable
- Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure success during the design and construction processes
- Schedule site visits as needed in order to increase efficiency in the design process and to provide technical expertise to the Project Manager during the construction phase
Pay: $60,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
