ABS is one of the largest classification societies in the world. We have more surveyors and engineers than any other class society, and a long history of MUN engineering graduates making their careers with us. The world headquarters for ABS is in Houston, Texas, with major offices in London, Singapore, Athens, Shanghai, and Ottawa. ABS is the in-service classification society for the Canadian Coast Guard (including icebreakers) and the Canadian Navy’s Non-combatant vessels, such as the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships.
The ABS Harsh Environment Technology and Digital Research Centre (HET&DRC) is a special branch of ABS Canda Inc. based in St. John’s, NL. The HET&DRC undertakes Research and Development and offers Advisory Services to ship owners around the world with a focus on ships operating in icy waters and harsh atmospheric conditions.
HET&DRC is responsible for providing technical support to the global network of ABS offices and ship owners/operators. Each day brings a multitude of inquiries from diverse clients, ensuring that the work remains consistently engaging and intellectually demanding, attracting bright minds eager to tackle challenges head-on.
HET&DRC continually innovates, creates solutions, issues guidelines, and propels technology development to bolster safety in Polar shipping, preventing environmental pollution and enhancing operational efficiencies. Leveraging cutting-edge advancements and proprietary software, HET&DRC promptly, accurately, and effectively addresses client inquiries, staying true to its mission of serving the greater public interest and meeting the needs of its members and clients while promoting the security of life, property, and preserving the natural environment.
ABS HET&DRC warmly extends an invitation to MUN Computer Science or Engineering students with a strong interest in AI-based software development to apply for a Fall 2026 semester work-term opportunity supporting research on an intelligent ice-monitoring system for ships and evolving the advisory service capabilities. You will have the opportunity to collaborate in identifying and solving new and interesting challenges, thereby enriching your industry knowledge and making a lasting impact.
