Senior Full-Cycle Accountant / Accounting Manager
Omni Group of Companies – Calgary, AB
Permanent Full-Time | In Office | $28–$32 per hour
About the Position
Omni Group of Companies is an established Calgary-based organization that has been in business for three decades. We are seeking an experienced, highly organized Senior Full-Cycle Accountant / Accounting Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day accounting requirements for our group of companies.
This is a permanent, full-time, in-house position for someone seeking a long-term opportunity with an established organization.
Our primary business is real estate and property management, with additional operating companies involved in e-commerce, consumer finance, micro-loans and credit-related services (Omni Brands).
We are looking for someone who is genuinely strong in full-cycle accounting and QuickBooks Online and who can manage our financial records and required filings with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Government of Alberta.
The ideal candidate is someone who can look at a set of books, understand what is happening, identify what does not reconcile or make sense, correct problems, complete required filings accurately and keep everything organized going forward.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad range of accounting and filing functions, including:
- Full-cycle accounting for multiple companies and entities
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Bank, credit card and loan reconciliations
- General ledger maintenance and journal entries
- Month-end and year-end accounting procedures
- Preparation of monthly financial statements and internal management reports
- Maintaining accurate balance sheet schedules
- Intercompany transactions and reconciliations
- Tracking rents, mortgages, loans, deposits and other balance sheet accounts
- Property-related accounting, including rental income, operating expenses, utilities, repairs and other property costs
- Cash-flow tracking and reporting
- Payroll-related accounting and reconciliations
- Preparing and filing GST/HST returns
- Preparing and filing applicable CRA and Alberta government remittances and returns
- Preparing corporate tax information and filings, where within the candidate’s qualifications and scope of practice
- Preparing corporate year-end working papers and supporting schedules
- Preparing financial statements, reconciliations and documentation for corporate tax filings
- Preparing schedules and documentation required by external accountants, auditors, CRA and other government agencies
- Responding to information requests relating to CRA reviews, audits and other accounting matters
- Maintaining organized supporting documentation and accounting records
- Reviewing historical transactions and correcting accounting discrepancies where necessary
- Monitoring filing deadlines and maintaining a reliable compliance calendar
- Helping improve accounting procedures, controls and reporting across the organization
QuickBooks Online Expertise Is Important
We use QuickBooks Online extensively, and strong hands-on QBO experience is a major requirement for this position.
You should be comfortable with:
- Multiple-company QuickBooks environments
- Bank feeds and transaction matching
- Account reconciliations
- Chart of accounts management
- Journal entries
- Accounts payable and receivable
- General ledger review
- Balance sheet reconciliation
- Financial reporting
- Preparing reports and schedules for tax filings
- Identifying duplicate, missing or incorrectly categorized transactions
- Cleaning up accounting records when required
- Maintaining accurate records for year-end and government filing purposes
We are particularly interested in candidates who understand accounting beyond simply entering transactions into QuickBooks and who can use QBO records to prepare accurate filings and year-end documentation.
What We're Looking For
Our ideal candidate has:
- 5+ years of full-cycle accounting experience
- Strong practical knowledge of Canadian accounting and bookkeeping and payroll
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Experience preparing and filing GST/HST returns
- Experience preparing corporate tax information, returns or year-end working papers
- Experience with CRA and Alberta government filings and remittances
- Experience dealing with accountants, CRA requests, reviews or audits
- Strong reconciliation and problem-solving abilities
- Experience working with multiple corporations or related entities
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong Excel skills
- Ability to monitor deadlines and manage recurring filing requirements
- Ability to prioritize deadlines without constant supervision
- Ability to identify an accounting problem and take initiative to resolve it
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal. (No exceptions)
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with management, colleagues, external accountants, financial institutions and government agencies
Experience with real estate, property management or multiple-property accounting would be a significant asset.
Experience with lending, consumer finance, e-commerce or businesses with a high volume of electronic transactions would also be beneficial.
Experience preparing corporate tax returns, T2 returns, GST/HST filings, payroll remittances or other Canadian and Alberta government filings will be considered a strong asset.
The Person We're Looking For
We value accuracy, accountability, initiative and clear communication.
We're looking for someone who does not simply process whatever appears in front of them. We want an accountant who asks questions when something does not make sense, reconciles accounts properly, maintains supporting documentation, catches discrepancies, understands filing requirements and takes pride in keeping the books and records accurate and current.
You should be comfortable working independently and taking ownership of your responsibilities while also communicating clearly with the team and external professionals.
Because this role involves financial reporting, filing support, written documentation and communication with external parties, an excellent command of the English language is essential.
If you're the type of accountant who likes bringing order to numbers, finding discrepancies before they become problems, completing filings accurately and knowing that the books actually balance, you'll likely enjoy this role.
