The Adoption Counselor is responsible for all customer service with particular attention
to encouraging adoptions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Give appropriate information to clients regarding adoption and services
available.

2. Educate and enlighten the public in a manner that is respectful.
3. Process adoptions in their entirety and ensure appropriate payment is received.
4. Process and record all transactions as required.
5. Follow supervisory instruction with relation to adoption area processes.
6. Perform animal maintenance (clean-up) in kennels & rooms as required.
7. Assist in the Gift Shop when necessary, including opening and closing duties, as

well as routine cash handling and stocking.
8. Assist in the Foster Department when necessary, including assisting foster

parents with any needs.
9. Other duties as reasonably assigned

performing job duties; as well as when representing the Winnipeg Humane
Society both inside and outside of the shelter environment.

2. Efficiency and exemplary customer service are demonstrated in the

Adoption Counselor/Gift Shop Assistant, 2018

Accountability:
Directly accountable to the Manager, Retail Operations & Adoptions for the
performance of assigned duties.

Authority:
Authority to perform all assigned duties and responsibilities within established policies
and procedures.

Abilities, Skills & Knowledge:
1. Responsible individual committed to the goals and objectives of the Society and
prepared to carry out duties in and thorough, efficient manner.

2. Knowledge of basic breeds and characteristics is an asset.
3. Must be physically capable and able to carry out job duties in an efficient and

thorough manner.
4. Communicate effectively with all staff, volunteers and customers.
5. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
6. Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
7. Ability to learn quickly and willingness to vaccinate, microchip, and perform

various treatment techniques.
8. Ability to work with others as part of a team.
9. Own transportation is an asset
10. Experience and skills in restraining animals safely and effectively.
11. Ability to lift and haul heavy bags and boxes up to 50 pounds
12. Ability to take direction

Education, Training & Experience:
1. Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent required,
2. More than six (6) months and less than or including twelve (12) months

experience required

Gift Shop Retail Assistant

Position Summary:
The Gift Shop Retail Assistant is responsible for promoting and selling retail items in the
Gift Shop at The Winnipeg Humane Society, providing cashier services to WHS clients,
and stocking, pricing, and ordering of retail merchandise for the WHS Gift Shop.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Promptly and courteously greet clients and determine their service
requirements.

2. Promote and sell WHS Gift Shop products and merchandise to adoption clients
and all other retail clients.

3. Process retail sales and other transactions on computerized cash register.
4. Handle cash and cash balancing
5. Receive, inventory, code, and price retail products.
6. Open or close gift shop as part of daily routine.
7. Stocking shelves and general upkeep of the gift shop
8. Order inventory in Manager of Retail Operations & Adoptions’ absence.

9. Any and all administrative retail duties assigned by Manager of Retail
Operations & Adoptions which may include creating and entering new
inventory codes into computer system.

10. Move merchandise and fixtures from storage areas to the gift shop – unloading
deliveries when requested.

11. Periodic counts of retail merchandise inventory, including year-end each year.
12. Communicate with Managers to ensure merchandise is available at the Gift

Shop.
13. Develop knowledge about the other services provided by the Society and find

opportunities to match available services to interested clients.
14. Work with other staff and volunteers as required.
15. Set up and tear down of retail displays for special events when required,

including transportation of fixtures and merchandise in WHS vehicle.
16. Other duties as reasonably assigned

7. Ability to handle large, sometimes unruly dogs
8. Ability to lift and haul heavy bags and boxes up to 50 pounds
9. Demonstrated previous successful promotion or sales experience
10. Grooming and dress appropriate for a retail environment – business casual
11. Previous experience working with volunteers an asset
12. Ability to take direction
13. Excellent customer service skills a must; positive, pleasant attitude and good

interpersonal skills
14. Responsible individual committed to the goals and objectives of the Society and

prepared to carry out duties in a thorough, efficient manner.
