Reporting to the Branch Head Librarian or through the Section Head Librarian, the Library Shelver works under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor (or designate). The role is responsible for shelving, shelf reading, and checking materials to keep the collection organized and easy to access. The Library Shelver also provides general customer service, assists with opening and closing duties, set-up and take-down for various library activities, and helps circulation and other staff, as needed.
As the Library Shelver, you will:

Organize material to ensure the public and staff have access to the collection.

Provide assistance to customers and staff to maintain a safe and welcoming library environment.

Perform opening, clean-up, and closing duties to maintain a tidy and efficient library environment.

Support library events, projects and operational tasks.
Your education and qualifications include:
-
Completion of Grade 10.
-
Successful completion of a library education program is an asset.

Experience providing customer service by working or volunteering with the public is an asset.

Basic knowledge of library programs and services.

Good customer service skills.
-
Strong verbal communication skills to answer customer questions and collaborate with other staff.

Good written communication skills for the purpose of writing emails and general correspondence to other staff.

Ability to read, write and speak English; French language skills are required for designated bilingual library branches.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to accurately alphabetize and put numbers in sequence, in a timely manner.

Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.

Ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with challenging situations.

A Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search) satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.

Must be physically able to perform the duties of the job including, but not limited to, lifting heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing/pulling book carts, and setting up tables and chairs.

Must be able to work evening or weekend shifts, as required.
