J. Connelly Rental is looking for a highly experienced, productive and fully independent Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
We are not looking for an apprentice or someone who requires constant supervision. We need a strong, hands-on mechanic who can accurately diagnose problems, determine the proper repairs and complete the work correctly within a reasonable timeframe.
Our vision for the shop
J. Connelly Rental is building a professional service department known for accurate diagnostics, reliable repairs and efficient turnaround times.
Our shop maintains and repairs our rental fleet, but our vision goes further. We are expanding our repair services for customers who own construction equipment, heavy equipment and small-engine equipment.
Our goal is to build a profitable, efficient and professional service department recognized in the Ottawa region for:
- Accurate diagnostics
- Repairs completed properly the first time
- Reasonable turnaround times
- Clear communication with customers
- Honest estimates and recommendations
- Reliable service after the repair
The selected mechanic will become an important technical leader in the shop while continuing to work directly on equipment. This person will also help improve our organization, repair procedures and overall service quality.
Main responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair and maintain gasoline and diesel engines
- Diagnose hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems
- Take full ownership of repairs, from the initial diagnosis to final testing
- Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled inspections
- Repair excavators, skid steers, loaders, aerial lifts, compactors, generators and other construction equipment
- Identify the actual cause of a failure instead of replacing parts unnecessarily
- Determine the correct parts and labour required for each repair
- Provide clear repair recommendations for customer-owned equipment
- Verify the proper operation and safety of every machine before returning it to service
- Accurately document diagnostics, parts used and work completed
- Communicate immediately when a problem could delay a repair
- Maintain a clean, safe and organized work area
- Contribute to improving the efficiency and organization of the shop
Required skills and experience
- Minimum of five years of relevant professional mechanical experience
- Strong, verifiable experience diagnosing, repairing and rebuilding gasoline and diesel engines
- Ability to diagnose starting problems, loss of power, overheating, compression problems, injection problems and oil consumption
- Ability to disassemble, inspect, measure and repair internal engine components
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems
- Ability to use multimeters, pressure gauges and diagnostic equipment
- Ability to read technical manuals, electrical diagrams and hydraulic schematics
- Ability to determine the cause of a problem without replacing parts by trial and error
- Ability to organize and prioritize work independently
- Ability to complete repairs correctly within reasonable timelines
- Ability to clearly explain a diagnosis and the recommended repair
- Valid driver’s licence
- Professional references required
The 421A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician certification is an asset, but it is not mandatory. Proven mechanical ability, diagnostic skills, productivity and independence are more important to us than certificates alone.
The person we are looking for
- Takes ownership of every assigned repair
- Works independently without constant follow-up
- Finds solutions instead of waiting for step-by-step instructions
- Completes jobs and properly verifies the repair
- Is reliable, productive, organized and accountable
- Understands that equipment downtime affects our customers and the entire company
- Wants to help build and develop a successful service department
Only candidates with strong, verifiable experience in engine and heavy-equipment repair will be considered.
