Opened in March 2011, the Cowichan Maternity Clinic (CMC) is a Primary Care OB clinic located in the Cowichan District Hospital adjacent to the OB ward.
Come and join a collegial and high functioning multidisciplinary team of eight highly skilled FPs and one Midwife/Lactation Consultant providing OB care to women in the Cowichan Region. Our staff includes an RN and two part time MOAs. Our practice is well supported by local OB/Gyn, Pediatricians and Anesthetists. We provide antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care to women up to six weeks postpartum. Caseload is approximately 250 deliveries per year shared by the group.
Approximately 10% of the local population is Indigenous and about 30% of our maternity patients are Indigenous. As such, our community would likely appeal to a physician who is interested in Indigenous health
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education is an important part of our practice – with four x third year Integrated Clerkship (ICC) students per year as well as Indigenous Family Medicine residents and a new Family Medicine Residency program coming in 2024.
Current NRP and Fetal Health Surveillance certification are required for this position. ALARM course or equivalent is recommended.
We have a shared on-call and clinic model, and have recently added midwife/lactation consultant to our multidisciplinary team with the capability to do home visits in the first week post partum. Our midwife/LC colleague also works in clinic and will be joining our on-call roster in the summer of 2024.
Work in the CMC is easily combined with other FP work in the community: Longitudinal Family Medicine practice and locums, Indigenous Health, Hospital Inpatient coverage, etc. Details available upon request.
