Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
In this project the research assistant will be using machine learning models to assess the presence and severity of Fusarium headblight (FHB). FHB is a fungal disease that causes loss in yield in Wheat fields. The assistant will develop and evaluate these models on image-data that has been collected by TerraByte's data rover from test plots in Morden, Manitoba.
Duties:
- Writing of scientific reports
- Presentation of results to peers and project holders
Qualifications:
- Academic Major in Applied Computer Science
- Completion of ACS-4953 Introduction to Machine Learning
- Completion of ACS-3953 Introduction to AI
- Completion of ACS-2112 Scientific Computing with Python
- Knowledge of deep machine learning object detection models such as YOLO, and corresponding evaluation metrics
- Knowledge of training machine learning models on GPU-servers
- Knowledge of Unix, SSH, SFTP, Docker
- Knowledge of image processing
- The ideal candidate has experience in automated plant disease assessment using digital tools
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from July 15, 2026 - December 15, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 150 hours.
