Instructor, Health Programs
Salary: $62,520 to $94,716 per year
Location: Homebased
Start Date: July 20, 2026
A market salary adjustment will be provided in addition to the base salary. Eligibility and compensation will be determined by Human Resources based on qualifications and experience.
Qualifications:
- Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Diploma
- A Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) with relevant higher education may be considered
- Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Minimum five (5) years of active practice as a paramedic is preferred
- Minimum two (2) years of instructional or teaching experience is preferred
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- A clean vulnerable sector criminal record check prior to commencement
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
Assets:
- Relevant degree or enrolment in a post-secondary degree program is considered an asset
- Experience in adult education or post-secondary instruction
- Degree or certification in education
- Experience with curriculum development, accreditation, or quality assurance processes
- Instructor certifications (e.g., ITLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, CPR/BLS)
- Experience with simulation-based teaching and related technologies

Nature and Scope of Work:
Reporting to the Chair, Paramedic Programs, this position is responsible for the planning, preparation, delivery, and evaluation of instruction for students in the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) programs. This role supports student success, maintains strong relationships with stakeholders, and contributes to program quality and continuous improvement. The instructor is expected to uphold college values, policies, and procedures while working collaboratively as an integral member of the program team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction
- Maintain subject matter expertise and competencies required to work in EMS and to properly instruct assigned course materials.
- Establish a working knowledge of learning outcomes, resources, assessments and delivery methods.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the paramedic programs’ course expectations and standards.
- Provide individual and group instruction in the classroom and lab settings, adhering to approved course outlines, learning outcomes, and established program standards.
- Develop working knowledge and implement teaching techniques, strategies, and approaches to engage adult learners in effective, meaningful learning experiences.
- Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and strategies appropriate for adult learners in face-to-face and online distance delivery.
- Ensure teaching methods adequately address various learning styles (Kinetic, Audio, Visual) regularly assessing the efficiency of the teaching methods.
- Provide students with accurate and timely information regarding courses, programs, and practicums.
- Foster student’s awareness and familiarity with the contents of the student handbooks, program and course materials, college policies, procedures and regulations directly related to students.
- Maintain current knowledge of professional practice expectations and standards established for the industry by regulatory and governing bodies and current legislations.
- Foster student development that prepares students to meet professional practice expectations.
- Provide timely, informative feedback to students by returning marked assignments, providing access to grades, providing regular progress reports, and other appropriate feedback as required.
- Provide opportunities for students' evaluation of instruction; take remedial action as needed in response to student feedback.
- Ensure exam security, co-ordinate exam schedules, and supervise exams as required.
- Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment for students.
- Travel to and from the college campus for student skill lab weeks and other meetings as required.
Student Relations and Support
- Ensure a working knowledge of student rights and responsibilities within the college.
- Encourage students to take pride in their performance, progress, and professionalism.
- Employ positive feedback, encouragement, and constructive criticism to enhance learning outcomes and to support students as they overcome barriers and challenges, as appropriate.
- Encourage students to review and reflect on their performance on a regular basis.
- Establish clear, consistent, and reasonable expectations for student behavior that aligns with college expectations and the expectations of the EMS profession.
- Assist students to access support services (Counselling, Learner Success Services, Student finance advisement, etc.) and make appropriate referrals when necessary.
- Provide appropriate student access to educational resources as required.
- Build professional working relationships with students and advocate on their behalf as appropriate.
- Demonstrate respect for individual differences and diversity.
- Encourage peer support activities.
- Monitor student attendance and progress; identify and assist students experiencing difficulties; make probation and expulsion recommendations.
- Appropriately and comprehensively maintain documentation on student progress, and follow-up as required to address risks or behavior issues as required.
- Organize and facilitate student orientation to the program, college, and college services prior to the start of course delivery.
Quality Assurance in Program and Service Delivery
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of criteria and program standards that must be demonstrated for ongoing program approval and contribute to its maintenance.
- Maintain a working knowledge of professional practice standards, code of ethics, legislations and regulations and practice guidelines within the field of EMS.
- Modelling a positive and professional image in representing the profession.
- Maintain current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of program curriculum through established and approved processes, indicated by the program leadership.
- Maintain and encourage professional, positive, productive public relations.
- Maintain a high standard of client service.
- Identify and participate in college and program promotional activities.
- Keep accurate records of student grades, interviews, assessments, required practicum documents, and other records as indicated. Track and submit student documents for filing on the student’s record in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and student records in accordance with FOIP legislation, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Be familiar with, and adhere to, college and program policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Participate in regular professional development; annually identify learning goals and provide evidence of progress toward achieving goals as part of the performance appraisal process.
- Be familiar with relevant OH&S legislations and workplace policies and contribute to a safe and healthy work and learning environment.
- Adhere to the requirements in the use of college technology in accordance with the guidelines, security measures, and policies set forth by the college.
- Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, managing resources, and identifying inefficiencies when they exist.
