We're seeking a compassionate and experienced caregiver to support a 91-year-old gentleman with advanced Alzheimer's who resides at Edgewater Retirement Residence in Georgetown, Ontario.
About the Client:
Our client remains physically strong and mobile but is experiencing cognitive decline that has led to challenges with toileting and personal care. He responds well to calm, patient caregivers who can build rapport and make him feel comfortable. He tends to resist care when he senses stress or urgency, so a gentle, unhurried approach is essential. He particularly responds well to male caregivers and warm, friendly personalities. While he has Italian heritage, he primarily speaks English.
Responsibilities:
The primary focus is assisting with toileting and hygiene during visits. This involves building trust and comfort through conversation and distraction techniques before providing personal care support. The process requires patience—typically 30-40 minutes of rapport-building before he feels relaxed enough to accept assistance. You'll work alongside staff at the residence who can provide distraction support while you handle the physical aspects of care quickly and gently. The goal is to complete care efficiently once he's comfortable, then re-engage warmly to ensure he feels respected and at ease.
What We're Looking For:
We need someone with strong dementia care experience who understands behavioral approaches for resistant care. You should be comfortable taking initiative, working confidently but gently, and able to read emotional cues. Physical capability to assist with quick clothing changes is important. A warm, patient demeanor combined with the ability to act decisively when the moment is right will make you successful in this role. Male caregivers preferred, but the right personality and experience matter most.
Schedule:
We're seeking two-hour visits twice weekly, ideally Mondays and Thursdays, though we're flexible on days except Tuesdays and Fridays. Visits should avoid meal times (breakfast and lunch from 12-1pm). Timing can be adjusted based on caregiver availability, though mornings tend to work best for the client. There's potential for increased hours as needs evolve.
