About the Role:
The Director of Construction will report to the Vice President of Construction and is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all construction operations at TPH. The Director of Construction provides strategic direction, develops operational systems, leads project teams, and fosters strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Identify opportunities for operational improvement, process standardization, and growth.
- Carry confident oversight of all active construction projects, ensuring they meet budget, schedule, safety, and quality targets.
- Lead all pre-construction to warranty.
- Manage the Project Managers and Site Supervisors with guidance, problem solving, and escalation management.
- Hold awareness of material and equipment tracking systems, including drawing reviews, bundle status, tool tracking, and site logistics.
- Conduct daily project reviews and risk assessments, ensuring proactive mitigation strategies.
- Champion scheduling excellence between fabrication, site delivery, and completion date, ensuring realistic timelines and accountability.
- Mentor, and develop Project Managers, Coordinators, and field leadership within the construction division.
- Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate closely with project management, VDC, and Prefabrication Shop teams to ensure alignment and execution efficiency.
- Support the recruitment and onboarding of construction staff to attract and retain top talent.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, general contractors, consultants, and partners thought events.
- Support business development by participating in client meetings, presentations, and project pursuits.
- Have decision-making authority and direct others in recognizing risk and uncertainty with plans to mitigate and eliminate risks (i.e. direct staff to operate and minimize exposure to claims).
- Act as an escalation point for client concerns and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Ensure accurate forecasting (1-3 months) and cost control across all construction projects.
- Lead project close-out from substantial performance through final completion, ensuring a smooth handover to the client.
- Partner with estimating and accounting teams for change orders and financial reports.
- Drive margin protection and revenue growth through operational excellence and disciplined project execution.
- Run monthly Site Supervisor meetings to drive consistency, reduce field turnover, and build a “ready now” bench of future Site Supervisors.
- Uphold and enhance TPH’s OHS culture, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and internal health and safety requirements.
- Establish and monitor KPIs across schedule adherence, budget/margin performance, safety, quality/rework, and client satisfaction, reporting results regularly to the VP of Construction.
- Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed and project deliverables meet company and client standards.
- Attend events to contribute to business development.
- Schedule and attend client lunches to contribute to business development.
- Facilitate effective communication between field and office teams.
- Champion a prefabrication mindset.
What You'll Bring:
- 5+ years of experience in a management role within a commercial construction company; experience within a plumbing/heating company is an asset.
- Highly demonstrated success in managing pre-construction processes for complex large-scale projects.
- Lean manufacturing training/knowledge.
- Competency in construction terminology and Ontario Building Code.
- Ability to understand and interpret blueprints and construction contract documents.
- Ability of identify and capitalize on business opportunities and able to address current or future problems within the company.
- Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills.
- Solid organizational skills, including attention to detail.
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Problem solving skills, including analysis of information.
- Bachelors’ degree in the construction field is an asset.
- Journeyman Plumber License is an asset.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
