Summary:
The position of Philanthropic Projects Lead is responsible for managing a portfolio of charitable projects being carried out by social purpose organizations around the globe. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining knowledge in Canadian charitable regulations, including working through an intermediary, international funding, and donor-advised fund regulations, as well as CAF Canada funding protocols. This position leads development of charitable projects with a range of social purpose organizations around the globe as well as liaising and stewardship of donors and ensuring oversight of intermediary project implementation in line with Canada Revenue Agency requirements.
This position is located in Canada; the Greater Toronto area is preferred. Candidates currently not located within Canada will not be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Intermediary Projects Management
- Manage a portfolio of international intermediary projects leveraging more than $5M in philanthropic funding. Responsible for working with social purpose organizations in the development of eligible projects, drafting of intermediary contracts, and subsequent monitoring of project implementation. in full compliance with CAF Canada policies and procedures and CRA regulations for direction and control when working with an intermediary.
- Collaborate with CAF colleagues to ensure completion of intermediary due diligence process
- Responsible for review of intermediary project reports to verify charitable partners’ compliance with agreements (budget, deliverables, milestones) and regulations. Follows-up for missing reports/information in a timely and professional manner, escalating issues as appropriate.
- Ensures timely recommendation of disbursements of funding in support of intermediary projects in line with reporting, payment schedules, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintains knowledge and understanding of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations and guidance, as they pertain to CAF Canada’s intermediary projects, charitable purposes, as well as registered Canadian charities and international activities.
- Supports impact tracking and communications to a range of audiences, including Board of Directors, donors and fund holders.
- Maintains shared filing, databases, and grants management systems that assist with tracking charity vetting and project agreements. Collaborates with Operations Lead to ensure Project Agreements, Project Reports and Vetting applications are tracked up for as needed for relationship management and compliance with deadlines and protocols.
- Drafts reports and presentations as needed (i.e. Donors, Board of Directors, external presentations)
- Various data management responsibilities include online shared file system, and CRM updates.
- Collaborates with Managing Directors on complex projects as needed and provides back-up support across the CAF Canada team as needed.
Qualifications:
- Must be eligible to work legally in Canada
- A minimum of 5 - 7 years of progressive professional experience in the non-profit / NGO sector, ideally in a grantmaking organization/role with a charitable foundation or government international funding agency
- Knowledge and understanding of CRA regulations governing Canadian charities
- Knowledge of donor-advised funds regulations and practices in the Canadian regulatory context
- Combines strong project management and relationship management skills, with proven track record of managing numerous files/ projects on an ongoing basis with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Recognizes the difference that can be made through philanthropic funding with a balanced view of the broader NGO/philanthropic ecosystem
- Excellent written and oral communications skills; ability to adjust communications according to the audience.
- Capable of leading difficult conversations to reach mutual understanding and resolving issues, including communicating declines and addressing non-compliance issues
- Skilled at drafting funding agreements that comply with regulatory requirements while also articulating the charitable purpose and impact
- Experience overseeing and reviewing significant or complex line-item projects or grant budgets
- Superior attention to detail and ability to accurately navigate large and detailed databases.
- Able to think conceptually and navigate complex and sometimes emerging regulations to identify project opportunities
- Ability to present and interact in a professional manner
- Proactive thinking and excellent problem-solving skills
