Job Overview
Tucana Aviation is seeking a motivated and customer-focused Fixed Base Operator (FBO) Lead Hand to support and lead the day-to-day operations of our Fixed Base Operation at Red Deer Regional Airport.
The FBO Lead Hand is a working leadership position responsible for providing exceptional customer service while overseeing daily FBO activities, fueling operations, aircraft ground handling, facility maintenance, and operational readiness. This role serves as the primary point of contact during assigned shifts and provides guidance and support to FBO team members while maintaining a safe, professional, and customer-centric environment.
This position requires a hands-on individual who is comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, interacting with customers and flight crews, and ensuring operational standards are consistently met.
This position includes every second weekend on-call coverage. Candidates must reside within 30 minutes of Red Deer Regional Airport.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead daily FBO activities and provide direction to team members during assigned shifts.
- Ensure FBO facilities, customer areas, hangars, and aprons are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, organization, and professionalism.
- Promote a positive safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies, aviation regulations, and operational procedures.
- Assist with staff training, mentoring, and onboarding of new employees.
- Support scheduling and operational coordination as required.
Aircraft Ground Handling
- Marshal aircraft safely into and out of parking positions using standard signals.
- Tow, reposition, and secure aircraft using approved procedures and equipment.
- Operate and maintain ground support equipment including tugs, GPUs, and related equipment.
- Assist with baggage, cargo handling, and passenger support services.
Aircraft Refueling
- Conduct over-wing and single-point refueling of Jet A and Avgas aircraft.
- Perform daily fuel quality control testing and inspections.
- Complete fuel documentation accurately and maintain fuel inventory records.
- Monitor fuel levels and communicate inventory and delivery requirements.
- Assist with fuel facility inspections and ensure compliance with fueling standards.
Aircraft De-Icing
- Perform aircraft de-icing and anti-icing operations in accordance with company procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable aviation regulations.
- Operate and maintain de-icing equipment and ensure all equipment is inspected prior to use.
- Prepare, mix, and apply approved de-icing/anti-icing fluids while monitoring fluid quality and usage.
- Coordinate de-icing activities with flight crews and operations personnel to ensure safe and efficient aircraft departures.
- Complete all required documentation related to de-icing operations, including fluid usage, equipment inspections, and operational records.
- Maintain current knowledge of de-icing procedures, weather conditions, and holdover time guidelines.
- Ensure all de-icing operations are conducted safely and in accordance with environmental and workplace safety requirements.
Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional service to flight crews, passengers, tenants, and visitors.
- Coordinate customer requests including transportation, catering, accommodations, and other concierge services.
- Build and maintain positive customer relationships that encourage repeat business and customer loyalty.
- Respond professionally and efficiently to customer inquiries and operational requests.
Facility Maintenance & Safety
- Conduct inspections of airside and landside facilities for hazards, Foreign Object Debris (FOD), and equipment deficiencies.
- Support facility maintenance requirements and report infrastructure concerns.
- Assist with emergency response readiness and operational preparedness.
- Participate in seasonal maintenance activities including snow removal and winter operations.
- Ensure all operational records, inspection logs, and safety documentation are completed accurately.
Administrative Support
- Process fuel sales, service tickets, and operational transactions.
- Maintain operational reports, inspection records, and inventory documentation.
- Assist with invoicing, fuel reconciliation, and other administrative functions as required.
- Complete Field Level Hazard Assessments and safety reporting requirements.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in an aviation, FBO, airport operations, or related environment.
- Previous experience with aircraft fueling, ground handling, or aircraft de-icing is considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated leadership experience or ability to lead a team in an operational environment.
- Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and make sound operational decisions.

Requirements
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Airport Security Clearance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP).
- Must live within 30 minutes of Red Deer Regional Airport.
- Must be available for every second weekend on-call rotation.
Working Conditions
- Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. or more.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Shift work may include mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call periods.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and operation of equipment.
