Job Summary
We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator who will operate one of three pieces of equipment: a John Deere 300G Excavator, Cat 320E Excavator, or a Cat 420 Backhoe.
McCutcheon Farm Drainage Ltd. specializes in installing systematic sub-surface drainage systems on farms across Middlesex, Oxford, and Perth Counties. Our work occurs year-round, weather permitting.
Our daily goal is to install as many feet of tile as possible while ensuring a quality install of a systematic tiling system that will provide benefits for the farmer and environment for many years to come. The Heavy Equipment Operator plays a vital role in achieving this goal and ultimately sets the crew's pace for the entire day by ensuring connection holes are always ready ahead of the Tile Plow.
Duties
The Heavy Equipment Operator will primarily focus on four key tasks, although other miscellaneous tasks may be requested depending on the job site:
1. Digging Connection Holes: Create 10-12’ long, 2.5' - 3.5' deep connection holes, ensuring proper depth and grade for the Tile Plow. Topsoil and subsoil must be separated. A General Labourer will assist the Operator to ensure proper depth is achieved and to install the required tee fitting. The time standard is 7 minutes on average per hole.
2. Locating Existing Tile: Dig locating holes to find existing tile in farmers' fields. A General Labourer will assist the Operator in this process. The time standard is 10 minutes per locate.
3. Backfilling Holes: Backfill the connection and locating holes in the field (3 minutes on average).
4. Daily Maintenance: Perform daily maintenance on the machine, including fueling and checking fluids every morning, and greasing thoroughly every evening.
Skills
- Previous experience digging to grade is an asset.
- Experience in separating topsoil from subsoil will be an asset.
- Strong attention to detail. The work is very precise and the environment is fast-paced. The Operator must be able to work with minimal supervision.
- The ideal candidate will be reliable and mature, possess critical thinking skills.
- The candidate will be able to follow instructions thoroughly and will speak up to clarify if they are unclear on directions. Being efficient by following instructions to the letter translates to larger bonuses in the future.
- Stamina to handle long days in varying weather conditions. Expect a 50-hour work week when weather permits. Very few hours will be offered when the weather is poor. In peak seasons, it is not uncommon to work 55 hours per week. It is not uncommon to have a short winter layoff.
- Transportation to the job site is provided, but candidates must possess a valid driver's license to operate company vehicles.
- Mechanical knowledge and understanding of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting is essential.
- The ability to tow and back up a trailer with a pick up truck will be an asset.
- The hours are Monday - Friday, 7 am start time, varying end times. Some Saturday hours maybe available in the busier seasons but are not mandatory.
Other
Preference will be given to candidates with more than 2 years Excavator experience. However, we are willing to train an individual who is willing and able to learn, is mature, shows work ethic, perserverance and drive.

Pay rate subject to change based on experience
Pay: $27.00-$33.00 per hour
