The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO), a key member of the University’s leadership community responsible for shaping and advancing the University’s technology strategy and services.
Reporting to the Vice-President, Finance and Administration, the CIO serves as UNBC’s principal technology leader, providing strategic vision and leadership for the University’s information technology environment. The CIO oversees the delivery of technology services supporting administrative, academic, and research functions while ensuring technology initiatives align with institutional priorities and advances UNBC’s mission.

The successful candidate will champion service excellence, operational efficiency, risk management, strategic planning, and digital transformation initiatives that enhance the experience of students, faculty, researchers, and staff.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Providing strategic leadership and vision for the University’s information technology services and infrastructure;
- Developing and executing an enterprise-wide IT strategy and technology architecture aligned with UNBC’s strategic priorities;
- Leading the development, implementation, and monitoring of the IT Strategic Plan;
- Overseeing all technology services supporting the University’s academic, research, and administrative operations;
- Driving digital transformation initiatives that improve service deliver, operational effectiveness, and user experience across the institution;
- Managing technology investments, operational and capital budgets, and multi-year resource plans to support institutional priorities;
- Establishing governance frameworks, policies, standards, and processes that support effective and transparent IT operations;
- Providing leadership for IT risk management, business continuity planning, and disaster recovery preparedness; and
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with academic leaders, administrative departments, students, vendors, government agencies, and external partners.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree will be considered an asset.
Candidates will bring a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive IT leadership experience, including experience leading complex technology operations and strategic initiatives.
Relevant knowledge, skills, and experience include:
- Demonstrated success developing and executing enterprise technology strategies.
- Significant experience leading large-scale technology operations, projects, and service delivery functions.
- Strong track record of building collaborative relationships with internal and external interest-holders, including industry, government, and institutional partners.
- Experience leading organizational change an digital transformation initiatives.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
- Strong financial management skills, including budget development, forecasting, and resource allocation.
- Experience with information security, risk management, business continuity, and disaster recovery planning.
- Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and interest-holder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in complex environments with multiple competing priorities.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to align technology investments with organizational objectives.
- Commitment to collaboration, inclusion, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
Salary
The starting salary will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education, skills, and experience. The annual salary range for this position is $150,000.00 to $165,000.00. The position is located on campus, in Prince George.

Normal hours of work will be 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
