Full-Time, Fixed-Term Contract (March 2019 - June 2019)

Outdoor education is an integral part of our students learning and development. Crofton House School believes that outdoor education enriches the learning of our students fostering self-confidence, resilience, and creativity. It is a vital element in the school’s “Ivy Compass” program. In addition, a specialized grade 10 Physical and Health Education class (“Challenge 10”), provides a distinct program for a self-identified group of students who share a passion for outdoor pursuits. Crofton House School seeks an outdoor education teacher to collaborate in the development and delivery of outdoor education trips and the Challenge 10 course. This is a short-term, maternity leave position with the possibility of extension.

As a skilled and experienced outdoor education enthusiast and educator, you are able to transfer your knowledge and passion to a diverse class of students (grades 8 - 12). You are confident in program development and demonstrate an approach to teaching that is reflective of the way in which girls engage in their learning. You optimize the resources available to you. You are actively engaged in planning, implementing and assessing learning. Your classes are student-centered and dynamic. You support all learners and bring innovative solutions to challenges experienced by students. Students, members of your department, colleagues and parents describe you as approachable, available, knowledgeable, genuine and supportive. You are energized by what you do. You understand the importance of parents as partners in their daughter’s education by maintaining open and collaborative relationships with the parent community. As a lifelong learner, you demonstrate a commitment to actively seeking professional development. You participate actively in the life of the school.

You will find the school to be a professional learning center. In addition to spending an engaging day with students who are genuinely interested in learning, thinking and playing, teachers are provided with time as part of their daily schedule to plan and work collaboratively with others.

Collaborate on the development and delivery of all outdoor education programs (grade 8 - 12) including the Physical and Health Education 10 course - “Challenge 10”

Be available to run and participate in extended day excursions that extend beyond school hours

Be available to participate in overnight outdoor education excursions with students in grades 10 and 12 (up to 15 days)

Collect, track and organize program documents

Communicate with families regarding trip information, participation and assessments

Support seasonal equipment inventory and maintenance

Participate in the school’s Advisory Program supporting the development of a small group of students in all domains of well-being as well as the Ivy Compass Program as a whole

Build relationships with teachers and staff across the school community

Participate in school meetings and events, including school planning and professional development

Participate actively in the co-curricular program

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience, Aptitude:
Relevant university qualifications (e.g. Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation, Bachelor of Physical and Health Education, or similar )

Graduate level qualifications, an asset

Meets the qualification to be eligible for the B.C. Ministry of Education Certificate or Independent School Certification (please contact Human Resources at Crofton House School if you have any questions)

Knowledge of the current educational practices outlined in the BC Ministry of Education documents, specifically the Physical and Health Education curriculum

Current first aid certification required (Wilderness First Responder 90 hour)

Experience and/or relevant certification in wilderness pursuits as an instructor/guide

Experience in an outdoor education role and an aptitude for working with youth in wilderness settings

An understanding of risk management related to outdoor pursuits

Experience in an independent school, an asset

A demonstrable awareness of the learning styles of girls and young women

Collaborative and energetic with a passion for teaching / working with teens

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skill

Energy, commitment and a readiness to participate in the co-curricular program the diverse life of the school community
