Weekend Night Shift Women’s Support Counsellor (50% FT)

Who We Are: Third Place Transition House provides 24-hour support services and safe shelter to women and their children fleeing abuse and violence. We provide non-judgmental, inclusive, confidential services; offering a safe space for healing to begin. Third Place also offers Outreach Services, Public Education and Programming in Truro, Colchester and East Hants. Third Place is committed to the trauma-informed principles of awareness, safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment in the work that we do.

The Opportunity: We are hiring a Women’s Support Counsellor to work 3 weekends a month, on a 4-week rotation, for Saturday and Sunday nights from 7pm-7am. This means you will work 6 x 12 hour shifts per 4 week rotation.

We are also hiring relief positions to cover sick calls, holidays, vacation and other open shifts as needed, so please feel free to apply on a casual basis.

Job Description: Under the Direction of the Executive Director, Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Responding to crisis calls and visits, assessing situations for safety and safety planning, processing admissions to the shelter, needs assessment, intake, case management/action planning,
  • Providing a non judgmental supportive environment to promote growth and empowerment,
  • Recording information and maintenance of client files, daily log, call sheets, and filing,
  • Establish rapport, trust, and responding with empathy when working with clients
  • Model and encourage a feminist perspective and demonstrating knowledge of women’s issues;
  • Connecting women and their children to relevant community resources,
  • Transportation of clients to appointments, court, legal aid etc.,
  • Preparing bedrooms, household tasks, purchasing and storing supplies as needed,
  • Conduct safety checks of shelter, room checks, weekly resident meetings,
  • Community liaisons/referrals, advocacy
  • Other assigned duties.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, community studies or a related field OR an equivalent combination of training and human services is required,
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal,
  • An understanding of the complexities of working with individuals who have experienced trauma and a framework that draws from an intersectional feminist lens,
  • Frontline experience working independently in a similar setting providing supportive counselling and/or crisis intervention, and
  • Valid First Aid/CPR, drivers license and criminal/vulnerable sector checks
