The Animal Resource Centre in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Animal Care Technician for approximately 12 months.
Reports to the Director, Strategic Platforms in the following units where assigned: Conventional/Biohazard, Single Mouse Barrier, Double Mouse Barrier and Surgery/Weekend Staff in the Animal Resource Centre at the Cumming School of Medicine.
Animal Care Technician acts as a resource to researchers, lab personnel and grad students as well as staff members of the facility. The position provides care for animals used in research in compliance with the University and CCAC standards of animal care. There are demands for heavy lifting and standing for long periods of time.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide well developed, consistent technical support and animal care services to users of the Animal Resources Centre facilities and ensure that proper procedures are followed at all times through education of staff and users.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Provides animal care for all species of laboratory animals used in research, which includes feeding, watering and changing cages following strict safety guidelines for prevention of exposure to disease
Monitors and assesses general animal health, and reports problems to the Veterinarian
Provides basic treatment for animals under direction of Facility Veterinarian, including injections, blood samples, antibiotics, euthonol and some controlled drugs
Provides custodial duties to maintain facility sanitation procedures
Interacts with facility users in a pleasant and respectful manner
Ensures at all times that work complies with animal, facility and good laboratory standards
Keeps supervisor informed of activities and seeks problem solving assistance where required, as well as bringing forward suggestions for more efficient operation of the unit.
Responsible for operation and up-keep of equipment eg. laminar flow cabinets, ventilated caging systems, autoclave, anaesthetic delivery systems and ventilators, biosafety cabinets, under safety guidelines
Receive and set up incoming animals
Record keeping is required for a variety of tasks, including breeding colonies and animal identification, ear notching and tagging and weaning animals as well as unscheduled deaths
Work with chemicals safely and properly, e.g. dilutions, using appropriate containers and protective gear
Responsible for keeping skills up-to-date and taking courses that will assist in personal and professional development
Flexibility to provide assistance in other areas as required
Provide well developed and consistent technical support and animal care services to users of the Animal Resources Centre and ensure that proper procedures are followed at all times
Ensure investigators follow standard operating procedures
Setting up new breeding pairs for researchers including maintaining clear records
Ensure supplies are kept stocked in a timely manner to ensure continuous availability
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safety regulations at all times
Qualifications / Requirements:
Animal Health Diploma and/or past husbandry experience with research related animals in a research or other relevant scientific/medical/institutional setting, required
Relevant experience in a research/scientific/medical/institutional setting includes:
Past husbandry experience in non-research facilities may be considered in the absence of the above noted qualifications. This includes:
SPCA or other animal care organizations
Farm hand experience
Attention to detail is crucial in following procedures and standard operating procedures
Ability to keep accurate and detailed records
Requires high degree of analytical skills in carrying out technical procedures with a high impact of error
In-depth knowledge of theory, procedures and skills in areas of specialized husbandry and complex technical procedures
Good communication skills required to interact with other staff members, Researchers and other facility users
Must be fluent in written and oral English language
Completion of course and current CALAS registration would be desirable. A sound knowledge of CCAC guidelines, University and Departmental policies & procedures and Health Canada Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines
A sound knowledge of principles of sanitation, disinfection and sterilization
Demonstrated ability to function as a productive team member as well as independently as required
