ISURA is Canada’s only independent, not-for-profit natural health supplement and food product verification and certification organization. ISURA serves as an analytical competence centre for the analysis of natural health products, raw food and supplement materials at all stages of processing.
The Lab Chemist analyzes raw materials and finished products using various instrumental and analytical techniques. The Lab Chemist handles all responsibilities while taking into consideration the company’s commitment to quality management, safety, sustainability, customer service and superior analytical testing competence as demonstrated by ISURA’s ISO 17025 accreditation.
Permanent Full-Time (40 hours)
Monday to Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; Onsite
$31.50 – $38.50 per hour
In this role, you will:
- Perform quality control (QC) testing (as per pharmacopeial or in-house methods) and assess data against pre-determined specifications on raw materials, in-process samples, and final products utilizing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis methods in addition to basic laboratory testing (i.e., weights, UV-Vis, FT- IR, etc.).
- Write and revise QC methods, standard operating procedures (SOPs), help maintain reference standards and their records, participate in product specification revisions, conduct effective QC peer review and QC releases.
- Learn and perform preventative maintenance and calibration activities for laboratory and production equipment.
- Conduct programs of sample and data collection and analysis to identify and quantify environmental toxicants.
- Participate in research to develop new chemical formulations and processes and devise new technical applications of industrial chemicals and compounds.
- Participate in research to discover, develop, refine, and evaluate analytical methods.
- Participate in fundamental and applied research into the synthesis and properties of chemical compounds and the mechanisms of chemical reactions.
- Participate in interdisciplinary research and development projects, working with process engineers, biologists, microbiologists, or other professionals.
- Contribute to cross-functional team activities as needed, such as product information logging and sampling, quality assurance (QA) support, product or operational investigations.
- Follow safe work and laboratory practices for cleaning lab glassware, equipment uses and preventative maintenance, sample handling and archiving, chemical and waste handling, gas cylinder movement, and other related activity.
- Source and procure QC consumables and chemicals.
- Revise schedule accordingly based on rush and priority samples.
- Demonstrate the ability to learn and use the ISURA laboratory information management system (LIMS).
- Participate in validation or technical document activities.
- Follow and adhere to all given instructions including work procedures, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and ISO 17025 and 9001 requirements.
- Strictly adhere to and observe all safety policies as outlined in the company policies and training sessions.

You have:
Technical
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or related science discipline
- Experience operating and maintaining analytical lab equipment and instrumentation (4+ years)
- Proficiency with computer software (including MS Word, Access, and Excel)
- Willingness and capability to learn new software
- Experience analyzing food contaminants such as pesticides and heavy metals
- Experience analyzing microbiological contaminants
- Experience working in a GMP environment
