Our client is seeking an HSE Training & Development Advisor in the Fort McMurray region. This role provides ground-level support to empower field workers to work safely. Reporting directly to the HSE Supervisor and/or HSE Manager, the successful candidate will detect and rectify unsafe or unhealthy working conditions, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance around workplace and transportation safety. They also train and develop new employees for the company.

They will have a Class 3 driver’s license and 3 years of experience in a full-time HSE-dedicated role.

How You'll Move the Needle
- Take part, as needed, in training delivered on site, internally, or by external providers.
- Provide support for HSE coverage during vacations and for site safety meetings.
- Attend required safety, supervisor, and client safety meetings.
- Monitor new hire training hours and report them to the appropriate direct supervisor.
- Create comprehensive training programs tailored to specific roles and job duties.
- Stay informed on current occupational health and safety legislation, standards, guidance materials, and codes of practice.
- Complete driver assessments for new hires, post-incident reviews, and annual evaluations.
- Provide field-based instruction to new drivers and heavy equipment operators.
- Deliver classroom-based training courses such as TDG, WHMIS, PDIC, DDC, lift truck, and related programs.
- Provide field instruction for spotter training and three-point contact practices when required.
- Support business unit mentors with field-level training as needed or requested.
- Oversee assigned follow-up actions from loss control reports and service control reports, and maintain records through HSE tracking systems.
- Support supervisors and management in carrying out required corrective or improvement actions.
- Assist with incident investigations and contribute to the development of related reports and summaries.
- Research, prepare, and facilitate weekly safety meetings, and assist in developing toolbox meeting materials.
- Support the creation and review of job hazard assessments, safe work practices, and safe job procedures, including the development of training materials when required.
- Respond promptly to urgent matters requiring HSE involvement.
- Work collaboratively with, assist, and mentor other members of the HSE team.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for safety hotline response.
- Coordinate the inexperienced driver program, including coaching, mentoring, training, and program administration.
- Assess new equipment to determine related training needs, pre-use documentation requirements, or the need to create safe work practices, safe job procedures, and job hazard assessments.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the HSE Supervisor and HSE Manager
Quality Management Systems
- Ensure the expectations and requirements of both internal and external customers are satisfied.
- Identify instances of non-conformance and document them through service control reports.
- Apply standard operating procedures to recognize, manage, and control non-conformances.
- Support and actively contribute to the organization’s quality management systems.
Performance Standards
- Effectively facilitate training sessions and seminars for both small and large audiences.
- Develop, maintain, and review training and competency programs.
- Complete hazard assessments across a broad range of work activities.
- Lead and participate in investigations involving serious or major incidents.
- Carry out root cause analysis and help develop recommendations aimed at preventing repeat occurrences.
What You Need to Succeed
- A minimum of three years of full-time experience in a dedicated HSE role is required.
- At least five years of experience operating roll-off, lugger, and front-load trucks is required.
- At least five years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment, such as loaders, excavators, skid steers, or similar equipment, is required.
- A valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s licence is required.
- Demonstrated personal accountability, commitment, and a positive professional attitude are required.
- Strong attention to detail, a high level of accuracy, clear verbal communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple significant responsibilities and priorities are required.
What Would Give You an Edge
- Certifications for end-user training programs used by the HSE department, such as forklift, overhead crane, fall protection, or similar courses, are preferred.
- HSE-related certifications or designations, such as NCSO, CRSP, CHSC, Train the Trainer, or equivalent credentials, are considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of quality management systems, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, or similar standards, is considered an asset.
- Previous supervisory experience is considered an asset.
- Alberta Landfill Operator Certification is considered an asset.
