Onua Bakery is an artisan bakery & café where we take pride in our unique approach to baking. We specialize in freshly baked artisanal sourdough and African-style bakery products such as bread, cakes, cookies, meat pies, cupcakes, chips, and other pastries. We seek an experienced bakery store manager for our artisan bakery & café who shares our passion for providing the best fresh baked goods.
This position is responsible for ensuring that all objectives and goals of the bakery and cafe, such as maintaining high-quality products, providing excellent customer service, and meeting financial targets, are met and exceeded. The role also involves the day-to-day management of the bakery's specific aspects, including ordering, merchandising, labour scheduling and customer service. The performance of the duties must ensure a quality service approach to all employees, customers and suppliers.
Duties
- Lead and manage the day-to-day store operations.
- Meet the monthly financial targets. Your financial acumen and strategic planning will be instrumental in the bakery and cafe's success.
- Maintain a customer-first mindset and be able to address issues and complaints identified by staff and customers.
- Work with the Owner, head baker (bread lead), and head pastry chef (pastry lead) to execute strategies to accomplish stated goals, such as increasing sales, reducing waste, maintaining high-quality standards, adjusting product offerings, optimizing staff schedules, and implementing customer service initiatives.
- Responsible for team development, interviewing, training, reviews, coaching, motivation, and recognition.
- Foster a positive work environment. Identify staffing needs, staff planning, and schedule development based on work demands and trends.
- Consistent and effective communication to lead the team, including one-on-one coaching, huddles, metrics, product knowledge and corporate policies and procedures.
- Responsible for retail operations and deliverables (e.g. inventory, ordering, item maintenance, quality and rotation, shrink, merchandising, invoicing, scheduling, payroll).
- Participate in store coverage rotation as a Manager on Duty, which involves opening/closing the store, handling alarm system emergencies, and providing support as directed by the Owner.
- Maintain and present a clean and organized store at all times.
- Ensure compliance with Safe Food Handling regulations and Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- May be requested to undertake other related duties periodically.
Qualifications, Skills, and Conditions:
- Culinary degree or certification in Baking and Pastry Arts is highly desirable.
- Prior experience in managing a bakery or food services
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Clear and effective communication style, both written and oral.
- Good judgment and decision-making abilities while communicating with customers and Onua team members.
- Ability to learn manual and automated systems/tools.
- Skilled at working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining priorities and a high level of performance.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and holidays.
- Fluency in English and French shall be considered an asset.

Physical Demands: The physical demands this position is exposed to are: The employee will be on feet most of the day. Employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Experience in cooking is a must, with a minimum of 3 years required. Additionally, possession of a Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent certification plus Level A First Aid and Basic CPR certification is preferred.
Location: Ottawa, ON K1N 0E7. Please note that you should be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work.
