Position Overview:
Mission Island Grou currently looking for a full-time Excavator & Grinder Operator to join our team at MDTS at the Hartland Landfill, and help strengthen our operations. This position will be reporting directly to the Site Supervisor and will be responsible for operating excavators and grinders, performing equipment inspections, and supporting the daily operational activities within our recycling facility. You will maintain the equipment, operate it safely, and manage material processing tasks like compost loading, wood grinding, and sorting.
Key Responsibilities:
Excavator & Grinder Operations:
Perform pre-operation inspections of the excavator and grinder, including checks on coolant, oil, hydraulics, fuel, and safety components.
Operate excavator, grinder, and screener efficiently and safely.
Excavator and wheel loader experience
Load compost into trucks, tracking quantities.
Maintain and clean all equipment, including greasing, blowing off debris, and inspecting for wear and damage.
Monitor operations for issues such as jamming, oil leaks, or fire hazards.
Assist with sorting incoming wood and brush materials before processing in the grinder.
Maintenance & Upkeep:
Conduct regular maintenance on the excavator and grinder, including greasing, cleaning, and inspecting critical components.
Change grinder teeth as needed and clean under the grinder to ensure smooth operation.
Keep all machines (excavator, grinder, screener) free from dirt and debris, ensuring proper operation and longevity.
Keep records of equipment performance and report any malfunctions or needed repairs to the supervisor.
Safety & Compliance:
Follow all safety protocols, including lock-out/tag-out procedures when servicing equipment.
Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) including steel-toed boots, ear protection, gloves, and a safety vest.
Remain vigilant when operating machinery to ensure the safety of both equipment and personnel.
Other Duties:
Water compost piles and assist with other tasks in the recycling center, such as bin loading and material sorting.
Support firefighting efforts if necessary.
Qualifications:
Must have a valid Class 1 licence.
Previous experience operating excavators, grinders, and other heavy machinery is highly preferred.
Strong mechanical skills with the ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshoot issues.
Relevant certifications in heavy equipment operation and safety are a plus.
Ability to lift heavy items, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and stand for extended periods.
Must be able to follow instructions from management and report any issues or concerns effectively.
A strong focus on workplace safety and the ability to follow all lockout/tagout and other safety protocols.
