As a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), you will provide holistic assessments within a recovery model framework for patients in psychiatric or psychosocial crisis presenting to the Emergency Department. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team in the Emergency Department to assess the patient, determine the level of illness and risk to self or others, and make recommendations to Emergency Physicians and Psychiatrists regarding the plan of care for the patient with the support and supervision of Registered and Psychiatric Nurses. As a PES Nurse, you will collaborate with services and organize referrals to community services or admission to inpatient units based on client need. You will assess and develop, in collaboration with the patient, an effective plan using the Addiction and Mental Health continuum to identify appropriate services for clients and arrange care. You will provide brief interventions to clients and will identify, initiate, and modify interventions based on changing needs of patients as appropriate to the LPN legislated scope of practice. As a PES Nurse, you will act as a resource to Emergency Department staff regarding assessment and care of patients with mental health conditions. You will provide an enhanced model of care to Mental Health patients in the Emergency Department. The population includes adolescents, families, and adults.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and Recovery Alberta policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
2 years of Acute Addictions and Mental Health experience within the last 5 years with an FTE. New grads who have completed a final preceptorship in an Acute Addiction and Mental Health site may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI). Experience in child and adolescent mental health. Nursing experience in an acute care setting. Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques. Knowledge of how to intervene is an asset. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act. Experience in various risk assessment i.e. Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk an asset.
