Specification Writer

The Specification Writer will provide coordination and support across the construction disciplines and is responsible for the creating and writing of project specifications. This position will have a strong knowledge of architectural and engineering design, construction practices, building systems and material application. The incumbent will be aware of schedules and deliverables and is responsible to assist in ensuring the project design is completed safely, on schedule and within budget. All work will be in compliance with the client contract specifications as well as our company policies and procedures. This position will work closely with the design team, consultants and execution group.

This position can be based in Calgary or Kamloops.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Specification Writer will perform the following duties:
  • Prepare project specifications and maintain them through the estimating, contract and execution phases
  • Have knowledge and understanding of building systems, components and materials
  • Be proficient in specification software programs
  • Can communicate and maintain relationships with architects and engineers;
  • Have a strong knowledge of buildings codes (federal, provincial and local)
  • Create and assemble documents as required for bidding and production
  • Develop and maintain master specification libraries
  • Assist the design team in preparation for bid solicitation and instruction for procurement
  • Assist with coordinating specifications for drawings through each phase of development to meet project milestones
  • Analyse plans and specific details to perform quality control reviews and ensure project documents meet requirements
  • Evaluate specifications against drawings to avoid discrepancies or errors
  • Broad understanding of contracts and bid process
  • Develop standards and requirements with regards to specifications
  • Other duties as required.
  • Educational requirements include a construction related degree or Building Technology Diploma or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience;
  • A minimum of 3 years’ construction experience creating construction specifications;
  • Working towards or completion of CSI certification and experience with MasterSpec
  • Construction experience is considered an asset
  • Computer proficiency – Microsoft Office products, Scheduling Software

  • Valid License and clean drivers abstract.
Working Conditions:
  • Office environment with a flexible work schedule. There is potential to work on evenings and/or weekends
  • Trained in required safety and operational protocols to be in the field
  • Travel as necessary.
