Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is a hands-on accounting and leadership role responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Finance team and overseeing more complex accounting activities. Acting as the primary operational accounting resource and first level of review, this position coordinates key accounting processes, supports accurate and timely financial reporting, and provides direct supervision and guidance to the AP/AR team. The Senior Accountant works closely with the Controller while developing the knowledge and experience to provide meaningful backup across the accounting function.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation or progress toward a CPA designation is preferred.
- Progressive accounting experience with strong knowledge of general accounting principles and practices.
- Demonstrated experience with month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, accrual accounting, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience in professional services, project accounting, or a similar project-based environment.
- Experience with Deltek VantagePoint or a comparable project-based ERP system.
- Previous experience supervising, coaching, or providing day-to-day direction to accounting staff.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate financial variances and identify underlying issues.

- Ability to review accounting work effectively, identify issues, and provide appropriate direction without unnecessarily re-performing work.

Responsibilities
General Accounting and Close
- Coordinate detailed month-end accounting activities.
- Prepare and review journal entries, including payroll-related entries.
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations.
- Maintain accrual, prepaid, and other accounting schedules.
- Oversee fixed asset accounting.
- Oversee cheque and payment processes, ensuring appropriate preparation, review, authorization, and safeguarding controls are maintained.
- Support payroll accounting and reconciliations.
- Approve reviewed timesheets for posting.
- Prepare monthly financial reporting schedules.
- Investigate financial and accounting variances.
- Support revenue and work-in-progress accounting.
- Prepare audit and year-end working papers.
- Support tax and statutory reporting requirements.
Accounting Operations Leadership
- Directly supervise the AP/AR Accountants, providing day-to-day direction, coaching, and support.
- Coordinate daily accounting workloads and priorities.
- Monitor AP, AR, banking, credit card, and reconciliation activities.
- Approve bank reconciliations.
- Review routine accounting reconciliations and month-end schedules.
- Ensure appropriate AP and AR cut-off.
- Coordinate vacation and backup coverage within the accounting team.
- Ensure AP/AR Accountants are appropriately cross-trained to support effective coverage and continuity.
- Resolve routine accounting questions and issues, escalating unusual, material, or higher-risk matters to the Controller as appropriate.
- Proactively identify and communicate concerns related to workload, accounting processes, controls, or team operations.
Team and Process Development
- Coach and support AP/AR staff in developing their accounting knowledge and capabilities.
- Maintain accounting procedures and process documentation.
- Identify recurring errors and work with the team to address underlying causes.
- Identify opportunities to simplify and automate recurring accounting work.
- Develop sufficient knowledge across the accounting function to provide meaningful backup and support to the Controller.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to personal and team safety by closely following company safety policies, standards, and procedures.
- Assist with other responsibilities as needed to contribute to the overall success of the team and organization.
