True Plastic Surgery is a physician-owned plastic surgery practice dedicated to providing exceptional patient care throughout the surgical journey. We are seeking a part-time/casual Registered Nurse (RN) with PACU experience to provide safe, attentive, and patient-centered care to patients recovering from anesthesia following elective surgical procedures.
The PACU Nurse will be responsible for the assessment, monitoring, and care of patients during the immediate post-anesthesia recovery period through to safe discharge. The successful candidate will work closely with plastic surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and administrative team members in a modern ambulatory surgical environment.
Responsibilities
Post-Anesthesia Recovery Care
- Receive patients following general anesthesia, sedation, and other anesthetic techniques and provide appropriate Phase I and Phase II recovery care.
- Perform comprehensive post-anesthesia assessments, including airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, pain, nausea, surgical site, and fluid status.
- Continuously monitor patients during recovery and recognize and respond appropriately to changes in clinical condition.
- Maintain airway support and administer oxygen, medications, IV fluids, and other treatments in accordance with physician orders, medical directives, and facility protocols.
- Assess and manage postoperative pain, nausea, and other common post-anesthesia concerns.
- Monitor surgical sites, dressings, drains, and other postoperative requirements.
- Identify potential postoperative or anesthetic complications and communicate promptly with the anesthesia provider and surgeon.
- Determine patient readiness for discharge in accordance with established discharge criteria and in collaboration with the surgical and anesthesia teams.
- Provide patients and caregivers with postoperative instructions, medication guidance, and education prior to discharge.
- Ensure safe transfer and discharge of patients from the recovery area.
- Accurately document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient progress within the electronic medical record.
Perioperative & Clinical Support
- Assist with pre-operative patient assessment and preparation as required.
- Perform IV initiation and support perioperative medication and fluid administration within scope of practice.
- Complete appropriate handover and communication with the operating room and anesthesia teams.
- Prepare and maintain the PACU environment, including emergency equipment, medications, supplies, and monitoring equipment.
- Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are readily available and appropriately checked.
- Maintain infection prevention and patient safety standards.
- Support efficient patient flow throughout the perioperative environment.
- Assist with other perioperative nursing responsibilities as patient volumes and operational needs require.
Team Collaboration & Patient Safety
- Work collaboratively with plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and administrative team members.
- Follow established policies, procedures, medical directives, and patient safety protocols.
- Participate in emergency preparedness, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
- Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and comfort throughout the surgical experience.
- Contribute to a positive, professional, collaborative, and patient-centered workplace environment.
Qualifications
- Current registration in good standing as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Current BCLS (CPR) certification.
- Current ACLS certification required by start date.
- Previous PACU, post-anesthesia recovery, or perioperative nursing experience is required.
- Experience in an ambulatory surgical centre, plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, or other elective surgical environment is preferred.
- Experience caring for patients recovering from general anesthesia and procedural sedation.
- IV initiation and venipuncture experience is preferred.
- Strong airway assessment, postoperative assessment, and clinical monitoring skills.
- Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to postoperative and anesthetic complications.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and emergency response skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating closely within a multidisciplinary surgical team.
- Flexible and adaptable with a willingness to support the perioperative team as required.
