The Senior Manager, Protection & Control Engineering is a critical leadership role responsible for guiding high‑performing engineering teams and shaping the strategic direction of Hydro One’s Transmission and Stations design portfolio. This role provides leadership to multidisciplinary engineering teams delivering Protection and Controls design deliverables, while setting a clear vision, demonstrating strong people leadership, and ensuring organizational alignment. The Senior Manager ensures the delivery of safe, cost‑effective, and execution‑ready engineering solutions that support major Tx & Dx capital projects across the province.
The successful candidate will lead cultural change by fostering innovation, driving operational excellence, and developing talent, while empowering teams to challenge assumptions and continuously elevate engineering practices toward industry best standards. Working collaboratively across the organization and with external partners, the Senior Manager will influence decision‑making, champion innovation and continuous improvement, and play a pivotal role in modernizing Ontario’s power system—advancing Hydro One’s commitment to safety, operational excellence, and long‑term grid reliability.
Job Function:
Working under the direction of the Director of Engineering , the Business Unit's goals/objectives/strategies by providing effective leadership and management direction on protection and control substation infrastructure issues to a team of protection and control design/support staff including contracted external design firms Plan, organize, schedule and coordinate work and assign tasks providing instruction, as required to ensure that projects achieve their deliverables. Develop, obtain approval for and maintain engineering policies, standards, templates and products. Be responsible for the development, and updating of the engineering plans. Maintain an accurate plan and progress schedule by providing consolidated information on the engineering project schedules and projected labour and contract requirements, through the functional engineering departments and external engineering firms, ensuring that critical changes affecting project schedules, cost and quality are addressed. Accountable to manage and co-ordinate the planning and execution of the Protection and Control portion of assigned projects/programs. Administer and co-ordinate the completion of various engineering packages of work necessary to meet the project defined deliverables. Liaise with peer functional managers and engineering firms contracted to perform the work, to ensure that resources, productivity and quality of deliverables are maintained to meet project requirements. Liaise with other departments, to ensure engineering issues, progress and deliverables are communicated and resolved in a timely manner.
Job Accountabilities:
- Manage the work of the technical engineering team in the delivery of expert engineering/design/analysis services involved in the design, construction, installation, reliability analysis, implementation and provision of technical support for maintenance of Protection and Control systems providing infrastructure systems.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of engineering capability through various means (capability assessments, market review of niche engineering capability, quality control, etc.) and recommend contracting of engineering work to increase capability of engineering and to ensure the delivery of engineering designs. Tender and evaluate external engineering capability and select (award) contracts for project deliverables. Assess the performance of staff and external engineering firms on projects, and conduct performance assessments as required. Initiate recommendations on selection of engineering firms.
- Assume leadership roles in the management and development of skills training programs required to enhance departmental staff capability.
- Perform ongoing management of resources (both internal and external) associated with assigned projects, with respect to monitoring the progress of deliverables, resource consumption and cost. Be responsible for the delivery of work assigned to specific projects or sub-projects. Assessing progress, and forecasts to completion, giving guidance and direction as necessary, in a working environment, which has the philosophy and goals of continuous quality improvement.
- Work closely with others to ensure engineering designs are aligned with requirement and constraints in the other engineering disciplines. Ensure that external engineering firms contribute and deliver products within the Hydro One requirements. Liaise with peer engineering managers, engineering firms and others to set common project plans and understandings, clarify roles, accountabilities and communication channels on an as needed, project-by project basis.
- Monitor engineering works status of the team, provide analysis of progress and issues and provide feedback to the Director of Engineering, contracted engineering firms, project managers and others. Define communications accountabilities and contacts between company line management and contracted engineering firms as required.
- Monitor utilization of specific system resources. Evaluate problem areas. Anticipate future resource constraints. Make recommendations to take action to improve engineering capability through the use of targeted niche engineering firms.
- Keep abreast of developments in the external engineering market. Identify and integrate industry capability and best practices as they relate to Protection and Control Engineering. Benchmark performance of engineering delivery services. Make changes to engineering standards and templates as required.
- Provide ways and means to improve efficiency and economics of the delivery of engineering services. Communicate with counterparts in similar fields, to exchange views and discuss the merits of improved design and technology.
- Prepare and monitor short and long term budgets as related to work load and capacity requirements.
- Establish and maintain liaison with external engineering and niche product firms, such as General Engineering firms, Niche design firms (i.e. fire protection) manufacturing and engineering firms (i.e. protection & control). On behalf of engineering, exercise judgment and tact in cultivating potential relationships.
- Contribute in the development and documentation of Engineering & Construction Services engineering processes, systems and practices, including new concepts, working culture (people acceptance), philosophy, operating and maintenance of standards and engineering policy in the dynamically changing field of utility engineering.
