PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Senior Writer provides expert writing and editorial services for Destination British Columbia’s global marketing communications. This role is responsible for crafting high-quality drafts for all omnichannel marketing materials, including web stories, digital ads, and emails. As the gatekeeper of the brand voice, the Senior Writer establishes the writing tone for each channel and ensures all copy is customer-first, engaging, and inspiring for key target audiences.
The position involves managing writer contractors in an editorial capacity and managing internal copy flow between teams. The Senior Writer collaborates closely with the Integrated Marketing Team to meet creative business needs while applying modern writing trends, including GEO-friendly (Generative Engine Optimization) best practices.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develops SNBC’s family of brands (the Iconics) voice, with each voice being distinctive and captures a certain target international or global audience.
- Leads the development and delivery of training on brand copy writing tools for internal staff, regional and national partners, destination marketing organizations (DMOs/RDMOs), and international stakeholders.
- Is the owner and acts as a steward of SNBC’s family of brands voice, ensuring all communications are aligned with established brand standards, tone, and messaging guidelines.
- Creates, edits and refines a wide variety of materials, excelling in both long-form (web stories, articles) and short-form (digital ads, social copy, emails) content for a domestic, national, and international audiences
- Partners with the Integrated Marketing Team, program managers, and other internal teams within Destination BC to identify priorities and develops copy and creative strategies that maximize impact and reach internal Key Performance Indicators.
- Work closely with the Manager, Brand Storytelling to develop and/or influence strategies and provide direction, messaging, and goals for copy writing projects
- Establishes and maintains the brand voice across all platforms, ensuring consistency and alignment with the Super, Natural British Columbia (SNBC) family of brands and visual identities
- Manages external writer contractors as DBC’s lead editor, monitoring performance and verifying that high-quality deliverables are met.
- Ensures all materials are accurate, appropriate in tone, and consistent with policy, internal standards, and is in alignment with the Super, Natural British Columbia family of brands voice
- Manages relationships with creative agencies, vendors and external partners to facilitate the timely and successful delivery of projects
- Gathers and verifies content from subject matter experts and information databases to ensure accuracy.
- Manage the writing budget and procurement contracts, including developing contracts, negotiating contracts, and evaluating contract performance.
- Manages the internal flow of copy between departments and provides writing advice to managers and staff.
- Senior level responsibilities including presenting creative work and representing the creative team from a writing perspective.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; OR
- Diploma in a related field and 6 months of relevant experience*; OR
- Certificate or coursework in a related field and 1 year of relevant experience*; OR
- Secondary School graduation (Dogwood, GED) and 2 years relevant experience*; OR
- No related education and 3 years relevant experience*;
- Relevant experience includes developing, writing, and editing content for diverse audiences and channels.
Experience:
- Minimum three years’ experience working in communications or marketing for related organizations.
- Minimum three years’ experience writing for omnichannel campaigns (web, digital ads, social, and email).
- Minimum three years’ experience working with brand and brand identity and/or voice.
- Minimum three years’ experience in editing both long and short form copy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced proofreading, copyediting, and information-gathering skills.
- Ability to engage and inspire readers through customer-first storytelling.
- Knowledge and thorough understanding of cultural sensitivities and the ability to apply a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to all communications.
- Ability to co-lead conceptual thinking, develop concepts and express those concepts through creative concept statements, taglines, etc.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
- Experience in modern writing trends, including GEO-friendly best practices and digital-first content strategies.
- Experience managing contractors or external creative resources.
- Experience working with Indigenous groups and other equity-deserving communities to ensure cultural sensitivity.
- Experience in the tourism sector.
