JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the “Facility & Support Supervisor”, the position of Support Worker is the first point of contact between clients and Willow Place. The position is responsible to provide a variety of client support functions that create and enhance a welcoming, safe and positive environment for Willow Place’s internal and external stake holders. A key component of this job is to assist clients in their physical, social, emotional and daily life skills development resulting in clients’ independence and allowing them to function appropriately in the community. The position is also responsible to plan, develop, implement and evaluate recreational, social and/or educational activities within the facility for the women and their children and perform duties including reception management, child minding, cleaning tasks and support to the shelter residents as and when required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Diploma or Certificate in related field such as Addiction and Community Service and/or Child Care Youth and/or Early Childhood Education. Must have experience of working with abused women and children.
· Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position that includes cleaning services, climbing stairs and/or lifting weight as per the standards of SAFE Manitoba.
· Must be flexible to meet the needs of a 24x7 care facility and be able to work scheduled shifts which may include days, evenings, overnights and weekends.
· Effective time management and organizational skills.
· Effective written and verbal communication skills and well-versed with MS Office, outlook and Internet.
· Must have knowledge and understanding of online community resources search such as Winnipeg Transit schedules, general housing search such as Winnipeg rental, Kijiji etc, be able to provide assistance with filling related application(s) as and when required.
· Must have current CPR, Emergency First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate, Adult Abuse Registry, Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Record Search.
· 3-6 months’ experience working in a shelter house (or related environment) with clients effected by domestic violence and trauma will be preferred.
· Awareness and understanding of harm reduction, trauma, client centered and strength based counselling and the effects of family violence on women and children.
· Hands-on experience of child-minding and planning and implementing age-based activities.
· Knowledge and experience of handling reception/phone board and dealing with customers will be preferred.

RECEPTION/ADMINISTRATION:
· Answers and accurately directs phone calls and other inquiries in a positive and professional manner.
· Greets residents and guests warmly and positively and ensures an accurate and continuous record of who is in the premises, according to security protocol.
· Stores, tracks and dispenses resident medication. Disposes of unused or abandoned medication through the pharmacy.
· Provides word processing and administrative support as required.
CHILD CARE:
· Provides child care for residents or clients who are in counseling sessions, appointments or in need of respite.
· Facilitates age appropriate activities as directed by the Children's Counsellor. May participate in both planning and implementing recreational or play-based groups for children and mothers.
· Arranges and oversees children's snacks with support of available parents.
· Ensures children in the care of Willow Place are safe and learning appropriate social behaviors in a manner that helps them learn self-regulation and respect of others.
· Ensures the play environment is clean and safe.
CLEANING:
· Maintains roster of resident work tasks and oversees daily task completion. Encourages and reminds residents about keeping common areas clean and tidy throughout the day and provides support to them as required.
· Ensures all areas of the facility are cleaned according to the posted cleaning schedule (night shift)
· Ensures all linen and bedding laundry is done daily.
· Ensures all resident rooms are cleaned according to protocol in a timely manner.
SUPPORT FOR RESIDENTS:
· Initiates welcoming and intake process with new residents and ensures all residents are familiar with the facility, guidelines, where they can find things, etc. and assists them as required.
· Facilitates regular house meetings with the residents.
· Facilitates recreational group activities with clients as required.
· Ensures an adequate stock of client supplies (emergency clothing, toiletries, diapers, etc.). Keeps stock organized.
· Provides support to food services and other functions as required.
TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES/STAFF DEVELOPMENT:
· Adheres to the values and guiding principles, policies and procedures of Willow Place and supports the strategic direction of the organization.
· Participates in staff meetings and offered trainings.
· Acts as a responsible team member by demonstrating initiative, completing work duties and by maintaining clear, direct and respectful communication with all people in the work environment.
· Provides support, direction and recognition for volunteers, students and work placements involved.
· Proactively stays current with best and emerging practices in the field. Participates regularly in staff development and activities according to a learning and development plan identified through supervision and the on-going performance review process.
· Provides back-up coverage to Willow Place as required in response to the needs and priorities of a 24hour continuing care facility which includes other duties as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Maintain agency confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
· Represents Willow place in a professional manner
· Maintains ongoing positive public relations with outside agencies, groups and individuals.
· Uses appropriate mechanisms for resolving internal agency problems.
· Maintains a strictly confidential/ professional relationship with clients.
