Senior Mechanical Designer (SolidWorks) - Heavy Equipment / Machinery
Windsor-Essex Area, ON$95,000-$110,000 per year, based on experienceFull-time | On-site
The Opportunity
Our client is a well-established Canadian manufacturer of heavy equipment, serving a global customer base through an extensive dealer network. With more than 50 years of manufacturing experience, the company designs and builds durable, high-performance equipment used in demanding construction, industrial and off-highway applications.
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer who brings strong practical machinery experience, sound engineering judgment and the ability to take meaningful ownership of their work.
This is a hands-on technical role within an experienced engineering and manufacturing environment. You will contribute to existing equipment, continuous improvement and new product development while taking increasing ownership across the engineering lifecycle.
Who This Role Is For
This opportunity is well suited to an experienced Mechanical Designer, Design Engineer or Engineering Technologist who has spent their career close to real machinery and manufacturing.
You are likely someone who:
- Has significant hands-on experience designing machinery, equipment or fabrication-based products
- Is highly capable in SolidWorks and comfortable developing complete mechanical assemblies, components and production drawings
- Understands how components are actually cut, formed, machined, welded, assembled, tested and serviced
- Can take a mechanical problem, develop practical concepts, work through the details and support the solution through implementation
- Is comfortable making technical decisions independently while collaborating with manufacturing, purchasing, service and other engineering functions
- Enjoys improving existing products as much as developing new ideas
- Wants to remain technically hands-on while taking on broader engineering responsibility
This is not a drafting-only position, nor is it intended for someone looking to move away from technical work into full-time people management.
The strongest fit will be someone who enjoys being close to the product, solving practical engineering problems and seeing their decisions come to life on the shop floor and in the field.
What You Will Be Doing
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems using SolidWorks 3D CAD
- Take ownership of design work from initial concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing and production implementation
- Perform engineering calculations and support design validation through FEA and physical testing
- Design with manufacturability, fabrication, assembly, serviceability, cost, safety and product performance in mind
- Work closely with manufacturing and the shop floor to support builds, troubleshoot issues and improve designs
- Support mechanical system integration involving structures, fabricated assemblies, purchased components and hydraulic systems
- Select and apply mechanical components based on performance and application requirements
- Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials within an ERP environment
- Support engineering changes, revision control and ECO documentation
- Take increasing ownership of product lifecycle activities, including design changes, component updates, obsolescence and ongoing product support
- Collaborate across Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Service and Technical Publications
- Support continuous improvement and new product development initiatives
- Provide technical guidance related to equipment already operating in the field
- Maintain clear engineering documentation and communicate design intent effectively across departments
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of progressive hands-on mechanical design experience, preferably within machinery, heavy equipment, custom equipment or fabrication-based manufacturing environments
- Mechanical, Manufacturing or Mechatronics Engineering degree or diploma, or an equivalent combination of relevant technical education and directly applicable mechanical design experience
- Strong professional experience using SolidWorks, including complex assemblies, detailed drawings and revisions
- Demonstrated experience designing mechanical components or systems that are physically manufactured, assembled and put into service
- Demonstrated ability to independently own complex mechanical design work from concept through manufacturing, implementation and ongoing product support
- Strong understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, forming, cutting and assembly
- Experience working directly with manufacturing or shop-floor teams to support builds, troubleshoot problems and implement design changes
- Practical experience with BOMs, engineering changes, revision control and technical documentation
- Strong practical problem-solving ability and sound technical judgment
- Ability to manage multiple engineering priorities while working effectively across functions
Nice to Have
- Experience with off-highway equipment, mobile equipment, agricultural equipment, construction equipment or heavy machinery
- Hydraulic system or hydraulic component experience
- Custom machinery or special-purpose machine design experience
- FEA and product testing experience
- Epicor or similar ERP experience
- Engineering change management or broader product lifecycle experience
- Component obsolescence or configuration-management experience
- New product development experience
- Technical mentoring or informal technical leadership experience
- C.E.T., P.Eng. or another relevant professional designation
What Makes This Opportunity Different
- Work on complete, real-world equipment rather than isolated CAD projects
- See your designs move from concept into fabrication, assembly, testing and production
- Work closely with an experienced engineering team and the people actually building the equipment
- Take meaningful technical ownership rather than operating within a narrow design function
- Contribute to both existing product improvement and future product development
- Join a stable Canadian manufacturer with more than 50 years of industry experience
- Opportunity for increasing technical responsibility and broader engineering ownership over time
- Competitive compensation based on experience
- Comprehensive benefits including health, dental and vision coverage
- Paid time off
- Long-term career opportunity within a growing engineering environment
