Position Summary
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in the team lead position will serve as a resource for clinical staff and carry a clinical assignment. The team lead will support the following primary responsibilities:
- Communicate additional staffing needs to scheduler/manager, as needed to support clinics.
- Perform daily unit safety checks, report hazards and ensure safety system reporting as appropriate
- Support communication huddles with team
- Support staff as needed and provide guidance related to hospital policies and procedures and clinic operations
- Regularly attend the surgical care team meetings and other meetings for department
- Ordering/maintaining stock and supplies (including clinic medication needs)
- Reviewing and approving the physician clinic lists for appropriate booking times and procedure type
- Communicate with manager regarding clinic operations
- Communication with physicians regarding clinic and patient bookings as needed
- Prepare and position patient for diagnostic tests and procedures
- Record charges for billing
- Document work processes as required
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Perform monthly unit safety checks and lead safety huddles as needed
In addition, the RPN in the Outpatient department is responsible for providing direct patient care in accordance with the mission, vision and values of the hospital. The RPN will adhere to the hospital policies. Direct care involved but not limited to: sterile tray set up for specific clinics, medication administration, coordination of care for patients, wound care, and VAC therapy. The RPN will be required to support a variety of outpatient clinics, including, but not limited to, gynaecology, general surgery, hand clinic, urology, ophthalmology, and fracture clinic.
Qualifications
Education:
- Current registration with the CNO (required)
- Completion of an accredited college program for registered practical nurses (required)
- IV Course/Basic Phlebotomy course (required)
- Current BCLS (required)
- Leadership courses (preferred)
- VAC training/wound course (required)
- Casted course (required)
- Perioperative course (aseptic technique principles) (preferred)
- Laser Safety training (essential)
Experience & Competencies:
Casting/fracture & hand/plastics clinic:
- Must have previous experience in fracture clinic to be considered
- Cast Technician experience required (fracture clinic).
- Must have clinical hands-on knowledge of the Musculoskeletal system, including anatomy and the ability to provide current and evidence-based health teaching
- Must have knowledge in basic splinting, orthopaedic emergencies, immobilization of limbs, traction cast care, cast application and removal & reductions required (fracture/hand clinic).
- Knowledge of Casting safety precautions for staff and patients.
Surgical clinics:
- Must have previous experience in Outpatient Surgical clinics to be considered;
Including but not limited to: knowledge of surgical clinics set up/surgeon preferences ex/urology, gynecology, ENT, APC clinic
- Must have experience with complex wound/care, assessments/applications and maintenance of VAC therapy
- Must have working knowledge of aseptic principles, including tray set up and assisting surgeons with minor procedures
- Must have Knowledge of surgical instruments and function: snaps, curettes, needle nose drivers, Adson’s, Kelly’s, tenotomy, scissors, weitlanders and sponge forceps
- Must have knowledge of Cautery safety principles and care for patients during these procedures.
Ophthalmology clinic:
- Knowledge related to the use of Tono-pen and tonometry preferred
- Knowledge related to IV medications required for ophthalmology procedures preferred
- Knowledge of Laser Safety principles essential
- Knowledge of tray eye set up and surgical utensils required for clinic preferred
Team Lead Competencies:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility with high patient volumes, changing needs, and timed appointments
- Support coordination of clinics, clinic staffing and ensure ongoing collaboration with surgeon offices
- Recent Leadership experience in OPD setting preferred
- Surgical experience is an asset
- Ability to work as a productive team member
- Ability to mentor/coach/develop others
- Demonstrated ability to organize patient care activities, remain flexible and adaptable.
