The Research Assistant will work directly with the principal investigator to coordinate research projects and work as part of a research team.
Prepares drafts of design research studies based on project goals for approval by the PI
Completes comprehensive literature searches for draft research studies
Designs study documents; maintains data collection sheets using electronic database program (RedCap)
Works along side PIs to prepare research ethics protocols and applications for submission to research Ethics boards (ARISE)
Reviews outpatient charts in EMR system as part of study protocols for inclusive/exclusion criteria
Screens outpatient charts in EMR system to determine eligibility for enrolment into studies in accordance with ethics approval
Prepares and sends kits to patients as part of study protocol; kits are for stool collection, blood requisitions and questionnaires
Administers pre-determined study questionnaires to patients, in person or via telephone
Addresses patient concerns and troubleshoots via telephone or in person
Coordinates patient in person clinic visits to explain research study to patients and obtain informed consent
Develops data analysis using stats software (SPSS)
Follows up with patients throughout studies to ensure compliance and coordinates patient visits until completion of study
Schedules and organizes weekly meetings with principal investigators to provide an update on project progress
Prioritizing tasks to be completed across multiple research projects
Works directly with principal investigators to prepare and submit grant proposals for funding
Responsible for writing and preparing abstracts to be submitted to academic conferences
Prepares manuscripts and other dissemination materials for publication
Presents at local meetings, national and international conferences
Attends weekly meetings and seminars as required
Minimum undergraduate degree in a related field of science
1-2 years of experience in same or similar position
Knowledge of electronic databases such as RedCap, ConnectCare, and ARISE
Experience using statistical software such as SPSS
Experience working in a Clinical/Academic Research environment
Computer proficiency with MS office
Excellent critical thinking skills
Strong interviewing skills
Ability to work autonomously with little supervision and within a multidisciplinary research team with students, co-investigators and other independent researchers
Excellent communication (verbal and written), organization and interpersonal skills
Strong judgement and problem solving skills
