We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Designer capable of designing complex custom manufacturing equipment from concept through commissioning.
Position Summary
The Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible for the design, development, analysis, and documentation of custom automated manufacturing equipment used in fiberglass and steel door production.
This role requires extensive experience in hydraulic press technology, automated production systems, CNC-controlled machinery, tooling design, material handling systems, and advanced mechanical design principles. The successful candidate must possess practical knowledge of the entire manufacturing process associated with fiberglass and steel door production, including forming, molding, machining, assembly, material handling, and finishing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and interpret advanced CAD engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for custom manufacturing equipment.
- Design complete SMC thermoset hydraulic compression press systems used in fiberglass door skin manufacturing.
- Design steel stamping hydraulic press systems and associated tooling used in steel door production.
- Develop automated fiberglass and steel door production lines including material flow, handling, processing, assembly, inspection, and finishing operations.
- Design CNC-controlled door processing equipment including:
- Lite cut-out systems
- Lock and latch preparation systems
- Edge preparation equipment
- Hinge preparation systems
- Multipoint lock machining systems
- Routing, drilling, and machining stations
- Design molds, tooling, dies, jigs, fixtures, nests, and production support equipment used in manufacturing processes.
- Design mechanical structures, machine frames, guarding systems, platforms, and support assemblies.
- Perform engineering calculations related to loads, stress, torque, inertia, cycle times, safety factors, and mechanical performance.
- Select and integrate mechanical power transmission systems including gearboxes, bearings, linear guides, ball screws, timing belt systems, servo-driven mechanisms, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and vacuum handling equipment.
- Conduct testing, troubleshooting, and performance analysis of machines, components, and production systems.
- Prepare material estimates, bills of materials, project schedules, and engineering reports.
- Support equipment installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement activities.
- Collaborate with controls engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, and production personnel throughout all phases of machine development.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and technologists.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of mechanical design experience in custom automated manufacturing equipment.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and 3D CAD design environments.
- Demonstrated experience designing hydraulic press systems used in industrial manufacturing applications.
- Demonstrated experience designing SMC thermoset compression molding equipment.
- Demonstrated experience designing steel stamping equipment and related tooling systems.
- Demonstrated experience designing automated fiberglass and steel door manufacturing systems.
- Demonstrated experience designing CNC-controlled machinery for door processing applications.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, welding, fabrication, forming, stamping, molding, assembly, and automation integration.
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, servo, and mechanical motion control systems.
- Ability to perform advanced mechanical calculations and engineering analysis.
- Experience supporting machine builds, factory acceptance testing, commissioning, and production startup activities.

Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience designing equipment for:
- Fiberglass entry door manufacturing
- Steel entry door manufacturing
- SMC compression molding operations
- Hydraulic press systems
- Steel stamping operations
- CNC door machining equipment
- Automated material handling systems
- Robotic manufacturing cells
- High-volume production environments
