Sources Archaeological & Research Inc. is seeking a B.C. archaeologist with Coastal ‘Field Director’ status (as certified by the B.C. Archaeology Branch). The position is based in Vancouver, B.C., with responsibilities divided between office and field duties. All Sources projects are conducted with full First Nation support, with fieldwork carried out with the full involvement of local First Nation archaeological assistants.
Requirements:
Certified Coastal Field Director (as recognized by the BC Archaeology Branch).
Respectful and engaged sensitivities for working in and with First Nation Communities, and with Heritage and Cultural Sites etc.
Ability to supervise, and mentor as required, field crews in a sensitive and co-operative manner.
Completed a BA degree (at minimum) in (Archaeology or Anthropology, or the equivalent).
Familiarity with British Columbia coastal archaeology and the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA 1996, Chapter 187).
Demonstrated experience in Northwest Coast archaeology and prehistory, including CMT identification, forestry survey and orienteering, subsurface testing, and artifact/fauna identification and data analysis experience.
Ability to learn quickly, work quickly, be an enthusiastic part of a team, and work with minimal supervision.
Applicant must be physically fit and willing to work outside in adverse weather conditions of the NWC.
Hold a Class 5 BC Driver’s licence and Level 1 First Aid.
Demonstrated skills and experience in professional CRM report writing and mapping (GIS programmes and/or Adobe Illustrator) to the standards set by the BC Archaeology Branch.
Responsibilities:
Directing Forestry and other related archaeological field surveys, taking thorough and clear notes, and mapping survey areas, test locations, and archaeological sites etc.
Independent or co-operative pre-field planning of all aspects of forestry surveys and shifts, including First Nation and client consultation.
Preparation of fieldwork background packages (maps, archaeological/ethnographic background, etc.) and gear.
Post-field note digitizing and map preparation etc.
Report writing and mapping to HCA standards.
BC Archaeological Site Inventory Form completion.
