The Originator II is responsible for securing and monitoring production contracts with farmers. This position shall purchase commodities from farmers and suppliers while developing strong working relationships, successfully purchasing the correct quantity and quality at the lowest price possible. This role is a strategic role that identifies and grows the grower base by creating new opportunities for the business and is expected to be a market expert in the region with a strong overall concept of the special crops market. This role will partner closely with the trade execution team, accounting team, trade unit managers, and plant staff. Where applicable, the Originator II will play a critical role in mentoring and guiding the Originator I position.
Purchasing of Agricultural Commodities from farm producers by telephone, on farm contact and other methods of communication. Focusing on purchasing of priority commodities from the purchasing requirements with the correct commodities and quality along with the lowest possible price in relation to the volume and delivery requirements.
Developing and Maintaining a strong working relationship with farm producers by providing credible and trustworthy marketing services that contributes to the company’s excellent customer service image in the farming community. Striving to maintain current relationships and develop new relationships with new producers.
Planning calls based on the purchase requirement priorities, as well as queries from the system on producers, commodities and target prices; notes about producers on the verge of selling the commodities; along with regular producers who have a history of selling their commodities at specific times of the year.
Continuously increasing Scoular’s commodity purchasing market share in the assigned areas and striving to make purchases from producers who do not have a history of selling products to Scoular
Achieving maximum savings in incoming freight by ensuring purchasing is focused on least delivered cost purchases by targeting specific areas for respective plant requirements.
Call producers who have not sold products to Scoular with the objective of learning about their operation and what it would take to have them deliver their product to a Scoular plant. Documenting the information from conversations with producers into the system’s grower phone notes function. This includes information about commodities they have grown, amount stored on the farm, what their target prices are, what their selling intentions are, and noting time away from the farm, as well as best time for picking up product, etc.
Each year, multiple crop tours should be made through the assigned management areas. Appointments are set up with producers and crops are looked at with them. Yield and quality estimates are made for the various commodities and the producer’s intentions learned. Reports are written to summarize what is learned from each commodity in the area.
Participate in industry relevant trades shows by arranging a Booth, when applicable, working the Trade Shows and Grower Meetings as well as other industry functions as requested by the Purchasing Manager.
Degree in Agriculture, Business or other relevant subject is preferred.
2-3 years commodity experience (farm grain buying experience would also be relevant).
Ability to evaluate commodity quality and make grain deals independently.
Strong problem solving and troubleshooting concerns with grain quality.
Strong ability to create and maintain farmer relationships.
Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Knowledge of operating standard office equipment.
Due to the occasional travels to growers must possess a valid driver’s license with clean driver’s abstract.
