Job Overview
The Fleet Automotive Technician will maintain and prioritize fleet vehicle repairs and service for our construction operations. The ideal candidate should have several years of mechanic experience in a professional equipment environment. This is to include a strong working knowledge of equipment preventative maintenance and repairs as well as ability to troubleshoot and learn how to work on a variety of different types of equipment.
The ideal candidate will have a large selection of hand, air, and diagnostic tools that line up with the desired experience. Responsibilities include prioritizing day-to-day equipment repairs in the shop, servicing equipment when needed. The candidate will need to be able to give clear and concise communication with their manager.
Mechanics working in this position must be flexible and willing to work on different types of equipment and with individuals of various backgrounds and ethnicities. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude and take a personal interest in mechanics, maintenance and equipment to be successful. This role will require someone who is willing and able to perform equipment repairs in response to maintenance requests, in the shop or in field locations.
Day to Day Responsibilities
- Diagnose the cause of malfunctions and perform repairs from preventative maintenance to component replacements.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot general vehicle operating systems.
- Document work performed, preparing vehicle records and reports in writing and electronically.
- Work with other technicians or independently in performing preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Perform necessary adjustments in equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations and prepare required safety documentation.
- Perform paint and bodywork on vehicles, as required.
- Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.
- Regular, consistent attendance is an essential job function.
- Perform other duties as required.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Completion of an automotive service technician training program.
- Must possess necessary tools to perform assigned tasks.
- Valid (at minimum) Class 5 Drivers License.
- Computer skills including email, maintenance programs, and diagnostic systems.
- Thorough knowledge of late model gas and diesel engines and on-board computers preferred.
- Experience using oxygen/acetylene equipment (cutting, heating, bending, fabricating equipment during repair) preferred.
- Experience using lifting devices (bottle, floor, wheel, or transmission jacks, floor cranes, etc.) preferred.
- Experience using precision measurement instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, electronic multimeters/testers, A/C charging station, etc.) preferred.
- Able to frequently lift components weighing approximately 110 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance from another person.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles equipped with manual and automatic transmission.
- Ability to enter and exit the drivers compartment of the truck and/or behind the cab using normal available footholds and handholds.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience
- Minimum two (2) years of previous experience.
- Valid Automotive Technician certification required.
- Red Seal preferred.
- CVIP preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Current Class 5 driver’s license; Class 1 or 3Q preferred.
- Able to provide a 5-year commercial drivers abstract with fewer than 6 demerit points and be insurable.
- Self-starter.
- Strong ability to multi-task.
Additional
- This position is shop based at our head office in Didsbury, Alberta. There may be a field callout to support our fleet during peak season that could include overnight travel and/or travel to another province.
- This role is considered a safety sensitive position.
- The employee must have the ability to sit, stand, be able to bend, kneel, twist, and climb to make repairs and perform heavy lifting of machinery and equipment.
- Work in extreme temperatures.
- Employee will work with mechanical and electrical hazards while repairing vehicles and equipment.
