Job Summary
A Controls & Instrumentation Technologist is a pivotal figure responsible for designing, optimizing equipment, calibrations, systems, and machinery, driving innovation, and ensuring the highest standards of controls and instrumentation safeguards. They coordinate the installation of machinery, robotic elements, and equipment used to measure vital information that employees need to monitor the manufacturing process. Lead projects across various teams, they spearhead strategic initiatives to enhance electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and control functions of critical manufacturing systems.
Systems Design and Integration:
- Innovate cutting-edge manufacturing systems integrating automation, data analytics, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
- Look at existing systems to propose improvements.
- ensure seamless integration of disparate systems for enhanced productivity and agility.
- Develop program for instrument protected functions and safeguards.
- Standardize technical troubleshooting.
- Apply IEC 61508 and the IEC 61511guidelines for proof testing and incident investigation.
- Understand basic regulatory requirements and measurement best practices.
Instrumentation and Controls:
- Develop specifications for selection and sizing of safety critical instrumentation (Pres/Temp/Flow/Level), Control Valves, on/off valves, relief valves and controls hardware, communications, and network systems.
- Preparing and reviewing IO lists and assignments.
- Preparing and checking Instrument Loop diagrams.
- Design and troubleshoot Basic RTU, EFM, and PLC configurations (Allan Bradley).
- Introduce more advanced systems such as compressor panels, RTU’s, BMS, HMIS, line heaters, and production facility equipment.
- Perform incident investigations using Cause and Effect Diagrams.
- Develop instrument calibrations and verifications protocols.
- Review HAZOP assessment and implement instrument protective functions to safeguard from SILs.
- Design, development, and technical documentation of the I&C portion of project work.
- Plan, coordinate, and prepare Material Requisitions, Technical Evaluations, and recommendations for various equipment within instrumentation and controls.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications and Skills
- Instrumentation Technologist / Bachelors in Science, Engineering from an accredited University or College.
- Experience in powder handling is preferred.
- Understanding and familiarity of API, ASME, CSA, AER and ISA codes and directives.
- Ability to problem-solve effectively.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in the use of Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI/Intools) is an asset.

- Must have Working Knowledge of Instrumentation Calculation/Selection, such as Flow (Orifice Plates, Vortex, Venturi, Magnetic, Ultrasonic meters). Level Measurement (Radar, Displacers, Gauges). Temperature (including Thermowells Freq. wake calculation). Pressure.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to Coach and facilitate individually and at the team level.
- Demonstrate a sense of urgency and strong personal ownership to operational performance and excellence.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS :
Works closely with employees and management. Leads cross functional teams of production, quality, safety, setup, maintenance, automation, and innovation.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Employee may be exposed to a moderate level of hazards in the work environment, such moving machinery, excessive noise, powered industrial vehicle fork/reach/ bucket lift/other.
- Work in office environment with long periods of sitting.
TRAVEL:
Willing to travel within the Extrusion Plant network.
